Jones
Academic Counselor

An
integral part of the athletic department, Reuben Jones works
to make sure that student-athletes take full advantage of
their higher education opportunities at Cal Poly Pomona as
academic counselor. Jones meets with student athletes on a
constant basis, assisting them their ultimate goal: wearing
a cap and gown to receive their diploma.
His duties and responsibilities include developing and managing
the academic advising program, assisting the faculty athletic
representative in determining academic status and acting as
an advocate for the Cal Poly Pomona student-athletes. He also
conducts workshops designed to help student-athletes develop
study habits, writing skills and familiarity with NCAA rules.
Jones also coordinates team study hall supervisors and tutors.
Prior
to his appointment at Cal Poly Pomona, Jones was a full-time
teacher at Diamond Bar High School (1996-99). Along with teaching
U.S. and World History, he served as varsity and junior varsity
coach for basketball and tennis. He is also very active with
Athletes in Action, a sports ministry program of Campus Crusade
for Christ, as a faculty advisor and basketball player.
A product
of Cal Poly Pomona's athletic program, Jones was a member
of the basketball team (1992-96), while earning his bachelor's
in social science (1995). In the final season of his solid
collegiate career, Jones earned All-CCAA honors for his consistent
floor leadership from the point guard position and aggressive
defense. He averaged 7.5 points per game, with a .429 field
goal percentage and a .355 percentage from the three-point
line. He came to Pomona from John Muir High School in Pasadena
(1991).
In 1999,
Jones married Elisabeth Rusk, who is in the graduate program
at Cal Poly Pomona earning a credential in multiple subjects.
The two reside in Azusa.
