LAU, TEJADA EARN ENTERPRISE ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
POMONA—Men’s tennis player Joshua Lau and women’s track and field competitor Ileana Tejada have been named the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Male and Female Athletes of the Month for February at Cal Poly Pomona.
The awards are voted upon by the student-based Bronco Athletics Association.
Lau, a sophomore from Chino Hills, went 4-2 at No. 1 singles for the Broncos during the month and led his team to a 3-3 overall record. The number of team wins already surpasses last year’s total of two.
The Broncos currently are 5-5 overall and Lau boasts a 7-3 mark – all at No. 1 singles. The Broncos return to the courts Friday when they play host to Western New Mexico at 2 p.m.
Tejada, a sophomore from Ontario, established a school record in the hammer throw in the Broncos’ opening meet of the season, held at the Claremont Relays on Feb. 23. She threw the hammer 162 feet to break the record of 156-3, set by Katy Everett in 2001. Tejada’s mark met NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standards.
The Broncos will play host the NCAA Division II outdoor track and field meet May 22-24 at Mt. SAC. The Broncos next compete at the UC Irvine Invitational on March 22. |

HEALTH & FITNESS TIP of the Week |
|
|
Feeling stressed? Take time for yourself. Although spending time with friends and family is essential, it's also important to have at least five minutes to yourself to relax. Try practicing deep breathing exercise when you feel stressed out. Enlist a friend or family member to exercise with you. Walking and talking with a friend can be a great way to burn extra calories and reduce your stress level. Don't overdo it with alcohol or caffeine. These stimulants will only cause you more grief in the end by adding to your feelings of stress. Try drinking hot herbal tea instead of coffee, and keep the number of alcoholic drinks to a minimum.

MENIRI, SCHUMM WIN CCAA INDIVIDUAL TITLES |
Meniri wins men’s 800, while Schumm takes women’s 10,000; women’s tennis team handed opening round loss in NCAA Championships; baseball closes season with 16-31 record
POMONA – Track and field remains the only Bronco sport in action for the remainder of the school year as the majority of spring sports come to a close. The track team will take a select crew to the Occidental Relays – mainly for those who are looking to improve upon their NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times OR those who are close to making the provisional standard in their respective event.
The Broncos are gearing up for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships on May 22-24 at Mt. SAC. Cal Poly Pomona is the host school for the event. Media members who are planning to attend the championships must apply for credentials, found on the championships link on www.broncoathletics.com.
The baseball team closed out the 2008 season this past weekend, while the women’s tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision at UC San Diego in the opening round of the NCAA Championships.

This week’s CCAA Tournament: The field for the 2008 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Championships is set. The four-team tournament will open Thursday at Chico State’s Nettleton Stadium.
Sonoma State (42-12, 26-8) captured the regular-season title and will be the tournament’s No. 1 seed. UC San Diego (41-14, 25-11) is the second seed while Chico State (37-13, 24-11) and Cal State Stanislaus (36-19, 24-12) are seeded third and fourth, respectively.
The Seawolves, who were ranked as high as No. 2 in the country earlier this year, will face Cal State Stanislaus in Thursday’s tournament-opener that begins at 3 p.m. UC San Diego and Chico State will play the day’s second game at 7 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament continues on Friday with three games, including a pair of elimination contests, and concludes on Saturday with the championship game scheduled for noon. A second game, if necessary, will follow approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
Three of the four teams that competed in the 2007 CCAA Championships, return to postseason play this year. Sonoma State, which defeated UC San Diego, 15-5, in last year’s championship game, will look to defend its conference title and win its fifth championship in 10 tournament appearances.
About CS Stanislaus Game 1: Senior A.J. Cavaletto (Santa Barbara) led a host of big plays Friday with a 2-for-4 effort and three RBI and closer Sean Hunter secured the win with two innings of scoreless relief as Cal Poly Pomona defeated Cal State Stanislaus 7-6.
Bronco starter Ryan Screnar (Claremont) gave his team seven solid innings as he struck out six batters, walked one and scattered nine hits. He allowed six runs – five earned – and improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Broncos, who trailed 1-0 entering their half of the first inning, answered off Warrior starter Eric Federico in the first initial at-bat with three runs. Senior Kyle Boggio (Santa Clarita) led off with a single. One out later, junior Chris Brehm (Murrieta) walked and senior John Daniels drove in Boggio with a single. Cavaletto then singled up the middle and scored both Brehm and Daniels.
David Contreras added a solo homer in the third for the Warriors and his team later tied the game at 3-3 with an unearned run in the fourth.
Tied at 3-3 in the fourth, Boggio reached base on an error by the second baseman and senior Andres Fernandez (San Fernando) and freshman Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights) both scored and the Broncos led 5-3.
The Warriors tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth and Josh Potter (Orange) put the Broncos back on top in the fifth with a fielder’s choice that scored Daniels, who led off the inning with a double.
The Warriors tied the game at 6-6 in the seventh as Wolfe hit a one-out triple and scored on Oketani’s sacrifice fly to right.
But the Broncos grabbed the lead for good in the seventh. Cavaletto earned his third RBI of the day with a one-out single that scored Daniels, who reached on base.
Hunter was extremely effective in relief. He set the Warriors down in order in the eighth, but the ninth was interesting.
He forced lead-off pinch-hitter Dante Palacio to ground out to second, but gave up a double to Kyle Loretelli. After a walk to Contreras, Hunter struck out Wolfe looking setting up the play of the game.
Oketani laced a shot to the right-hand side of shortstop Joe Villa, who looked to get the force at second. When he couldn’t make the play, he then stepped forward and threw to catcher Andres Fernandez, who was able to put the tag on Loretelli to end the game.
Game 2 and 3: Marquis Fleming threw five innings of no-hit ball and teammate Andrew Steuve threw a five-hit shutout as Cal State Stanislaus swept a pair of ballgames from Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, 15-5 in the opener and 11-0 in the second game.
In the opener, the Broncos trailed 3-0 after the first inning and answered right back with three runs of their own. Senior A.J. Cavaletto reached base on a fielder’s choice that scored senior Jason Jordan, who reached on a single. Then Chris Wilson added a run-scoring single that scored senior John Daniels, who walked and junior Josh Potter had an RBI single that scored Cavaletto.
But Fleming then shut down the Broncos over the next five innings. He retired the next 12 batters and finished with four strikeouts, five walks, and four hits.
In the second game, the Broncos allowed five runs in the first inning and never were in the game. Frank Klopp (junior, Oceanside) had the only extra-base hit for the Broncos off Steuve – a double in the ninth.
Game 4: Senior Andres Fernandez had three RBI and junior Chris Wilson went 3-for-3, but the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos closed the 2008 season with a 13-8 loss.
The Warriors led a hit barrage with 18 hits that included seven extra-base hits and three home runs. They scored multi-runs in six innings for the victory.
Trailing 2-0 entering the second inning, the Broncos tied the game. Fernandez hit a two-run single that scored junior Josh Potter (Orange), who reached on a walk, and Wilson, who singled.
The Warriors would go on to a 6-2 in the fourth and Cal Poly Pomona cut the lead to 6-3 in the fourth. Senior Kyle Boggio’s two-out single scored Wilson, who reached on a single.
The Warriors added two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to lead 10-3, but Cal Poly Pomona mounted a comeback with a four-run, five-hit attack in the seventh. Five straight singles by Boggio, senior Jason Jordan, senior Matt Davidson (Laguna Hills), senior John Daniels and senior A.J. Cavaletto put the Broncos in contention. All but Cavaletto scored and the Broncos trailed 10-7 entering the eighth.
But the Warriors answered right back in the eighth. The decisive blow was a
three-run homer by Fontville with a little help from Broncos left fielder John Daniels. Fontville delivered a high shot to deep left. Daniels went back to the warning track and as he was about to make the catch over the wall, the ball hit his glove and he hit the fence at the same time and the ball dropped then over.
The Broncos added a run in the ninth – freshman Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights) singled in Potter, who opened the inning with a single.

NCAA TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
|
The largest event in NCAA Division II Track and Field will take place May 22-24 and Cal Poly Pomona University will be at the forefront of the event.
The Broncos will play host to the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second time in four years at Mt. San Antonio College’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
“We are extremely honored to serve as the host institution for the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships,” Bronco Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Brian Swanson said. “The ability to have our student-athletes compete on a national level in front of family and friends enhances their overall experience at Cal Poly Pomona. Our local corporate partners also benefit from the economic influence this championship brings as it did with the 2005 National Cross Country Championships and other past events.”
The Broncos have hosted several NCAA cross country and track and field events in recent years. Cal Poly Pomona hosted national cross country championships in 2000 and 2005 at Prado Park in Chino and also hosted regional cross country events those same two years.
When the Broncos hosted the 2004 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, it was the first time that event had been held in Southern California since 1996 when UC Riverside hosted the championships.
A plethora of volunteer opportunities exist for those who wish to take part in the championships. This NCAA Championship will be as successful as those who work together to put on the meet for the nation’s best Division II Track and Filed student-athletes. Volunteers are being accepted for Thursday, Friday and Saturday to assist in a variety of ways including ticket sales, merchandising, event management, working at a specific event, media relations and many other unique opportunities. Should you consider working one shift (approximately four hours) or a few, please contact Sonia Campos (909) 869-2810.
For the event schedule and more information, please go to www.broncoathletics.com and click on the NCAA Track and Field 2008 Championship logo. |

Jennifer Gaines, College Recruiting Manager for Enterprise Rent-A-Car, says, “I love that Enterprise is able to help with scholarship support for these deserving student-athletes. I know from experience that they are great to work with, and we have had good success in interviewing and hiring Bronco student-athletes for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Management Training Program. Athletes, especially Bronco student-athletes, consistently display many of the features needed to be successful after graduation. They have a drive and sense of competition, they know how to work hard and learn in a team environment, and they want to win while showing class and respect.”
