HEALTH & FITNESS TIP of the Week

How do some exercisers get away with less soreness than others? One study suggests flexibility reduces susceptibility to exercise-induced muscle damage and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Eccentric exercise (or “negatives”) frequently causes muscle damage and DOMS. After eccentric exercises, the least flexible subjects felt more muscle tenderness and pain than the most flexible subjects on the second and third days. The least flexible subjects also experienced a significant loss of isometric strength. Why? The strain of lengthening stiff muscles during eccentric contraction results in muscle fiber damage. Exercise in the presence of muscle damage involves a greater metabolic stress, and limits exercise intensity and duration. Therefore, more flexible people may be able to exercise at a higher intensity or for a greater duration on the days after a bout of eccentric exercise.

On a roll: The Broncos have won 10 of their last 14 and have not lost a series since winning one of four against Chico State on Feb. 27-March 1. CPP split a doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay, took 3 of 4 from CSUDH, won a doubleheader at Grand Canyon, split a doubleheader against Sonoma State and won 3 of 4 this past week from Cal State San Bernardino.

About the Gators: SFSU (8-25, 2-22) will play host to Point Loma and Cal Baptist on Monday and face Point Loma in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Three-dot data: The Broncos stood out offensively on the mound in their four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos hit .289 with 21 RBI and 10 extra-base hits… Junior Richard McDowell (Santa Clara) led the way in the series with a .400 average (6-of-15) with a three-run HR to his credit in the 6-5 loss… Senior Jeff Ringholm (Granite Bay) continued his hot hitting with a .353 average including a HR at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, home of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Single-A Minor League affiliate… Pitching was absolutely outstanding for Mike Ashman’s crew… The Broncos allowed just five earned runs in 34 innings pitched capped by the 2-0 shutout in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader… Broncos’ pitching finished with a 1.32 ERA in four games and each of Ashman’s underclassmen starters were stellar. Geoff Broussard (Alta Loma) allowed one earned run (four runs) in the 6-5 loss Thursday, Casey McCarthy (Valencia) threw six innings and allowed three hits and one earned run in the 11-1 Bronco victory… Freshman Kevin Bosson (Claremont) shut out CSUSB over six innings and gave up three hits… Sophomore Casey Yokubaitis (Goleta) threw five innings in the seven-inning game and gave up four hits and one earned run.

Junior relievers Brad Wilson (Garden Grove) and Joshua Krist (Petaluma) combined to throw 6 2/3 innings of shutout relief with just three hits (Wilson – 2).

In contention: With four weeks of the regular season remaining, there is a log jam for the fourth and final CCAA Tournament spot. Cal State Dominguez Hills ranks fourth in the league at 14-10 with Cal State Stanislaus one-half game back at 14-11. Cal State San Bernardino is 12-11 and Chico State and the Broncos are at 12-12 with 12 CCAA games remaining.

Against Cal State San Bernardino (Game 1): Junior Richard McDowell (Santa Clara) laced a three-run homer in the eighth inning, but the Broncos couldn’t draw any closer than a run as the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes defeated the Broncos 6-5 in the teams’ California Collegiate Athletic Association baseball series opener at Scolinos Field on Thursday.

After the Coyotes added a run in the ninth on Johnnie Haas’ RBI-single -to increased their lead to 6-4, the Broncos had their shot in the ninth. Senior Chris Brehm his a one-out double that scored Dylan Cohen (junior, Marina del Rey) to pull the Broncos within a run. Junior Nick Tanos (Cypress) got on base when Cody Madison couldn’t track down slicing pop fly that bounced off his glove and the Broncos had runners at second and third.

The Coyotes intentionally walked freshman Jenzen Torres (Valencia), giving McDowell another shot. But he struck out on a foul tip and senior Jeff Ringholm (Granite Bay) flew out to center to end the game.

The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the first on Brehm’s run-scoring double that scored sophomore Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights), who singled.

The Coyotes scored three runs – all unearned – in the fourth when Madison placed an infield bunt toward third. Torres, who earned the start at third for the first time this season, fielded the ball, but threw awkwardly over first baseman Tanos and the ball went into right, scoring Jesus Beltran and Jordan Lowe. But when Villa picked up the ball in right field, his throw was errant over third base and Madison went into score.

The Coyotes built their lead 5-1 in the eighth with two runs on two hits.

Brehm doubled twice for CPP and Tanos, McDowell, and senior Frank Klopp (Oceanside) each had two hits.

Freshman RHP Geoff Broussard (Alta Loma) gave the Broncos seven strong innings. He scattered six hits and allowed four runs, but just one was earned. He is 1-1 on the season.

McCarthy (2-0) danced his way out of trouble in the third inning. The Coyotes threatened with bases loaded and one out. Broncos coach Mike Ashman said the freshman may have been “three or four pitches from being pulled’’ but he got a break when he induced Coyotes clean-up hitter Jordan Lowe into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

Casey looked like he was a little bit nervous, but his roommate (third baseman Jenzen Torres) made the play and it seemed to calm him down,’’ Ashman said. “We got Casey some runs and he settled down and did a nice job for us. I’m proud of him.’’

Trailing 1-0, the Broncos compiled a seven-run, six-hit inning with 12 men sent to the plate. Senior Frank Klopp (Oceanside) led off with a double and junior Marcus Makia (Kihei, Hawaii) followed with a single. Leadoff hitter Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights) delivered a two-run single and senior Jeff Ringholm (Granite Bay) answered with a run-scoring single and the Broncos led 3-1. Three at-bats later and with two outs, Torres (Valencia) doubled to score Ringholm. Junior Richard McDowell followed with a run-scoring single to plate Torres and CPP led 5-1.

After freshman Keith Nyeholt (Glendora) walked, Klopp reached base on a hit by pitch to load the bases. McDowell then scored on a passed ball and Nyeholt scored when Makia reached on an error.

McCarthy settled down over the next three innings as he retired nine of the next 10 Coyote batters. He threw six innings, allowed three hits. He walked five but only issued two in his final three innings.

Relievers Brandan King (Walnut), Jarett Attard (Poway) and Ryan Screnar (Claremont) combined on three innings of shut-out relief and combined gave up just two hits.

Offensively, Ringholm and McDowell had three hits apiece. Ringholm leads CPP in hitting at .443 and McDowell crept closer to the .400 level at .390.

The Broncos got three hitless innings of relief from junior Brad Wilson (Garden Grove) as the Broncos shut out the Coyotes on junior Marcus Makia's (Kihei, Hawaii) two-run single in the second inning.

The Broncos’ Richard McDowell (Santa Clara) opened the second inning with a single. One out later, senior Frank Klopp (Oceanside) singled and reached second on the throw. Makia punched a single through the left side and the Broncos’ runs held up for the victory.

Junior Nick Tanos (Cypress) singled twice for Cal Poly Pomona.

In game two, the Broncos scored five runs in the first inning, the big blow being a three-run homer by senior Jeff Ringholm (Granite Bay). Yokubaitis (2-2) went five innings, giving up four hits and one run followed by junior Joshua Krist (Petaluma), who pitched two innings of one-hit ball to close out the sweep.

The Broncos got everything taken care of in the first inning. Sophomore Joe Villa (Hacienda Heights) led off with a single and junior Erik Riedel (Santa Rosa) drove Villa in with a triple down the right-field line. Senior Chris Brehm (Murrieta) followed with an RBI double. After Tanos struck out, McDowell reached base on a walk to set up Ringholm’s heroics.

Other top times for the men’s team included freshman Jake Deavers (Lake Elsinore), who placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (15.23).

The women were led by senior Tiffany Turner (La Crescenta), who placed third in the 5000 meters in 17:43.74, the sixth best time in school history.

Senior Amanda Smith (Orinda) improved her personal best in the long jump to 18 feet, 1 inch – more than nine inches farther than her season best of 17-4 ¾.
