Math 325
Reminder: Thursday November 12 is a furlough
day;
there
will be no class.
Homework
- Homework 1 (due Thursday 10/1. Please
print out this cover sheet and staple it to the front of your homework.)
Note:
We'll cover the Euclidean Algorithm on Tuesday. You should have enough
information to do the rest of the problems now, though.
- Homework 2 (due Thursday 10/8)
- Homework 3 (due Thursday 10/15)
- Homework 4 (due Thursday 10/22)
- Homework 5 (due Thursday 11/5) Here
is where you can find the values of the Euler phi function for problem 5.
- Homework 6 (due Tuesday 11/10) Here is a page that
has a modular arithmetic calculator that might be helpful for RSA
encryption/decryption. P.S. I'm hoping that my encryption worked
properly; I am too tired to guarantee that's the case, though.
Please let me know if you think something is wrong.
- Homework 7 (due Tuesday 11/17) I know
that this
homework has a lot of parts; make sure you at least do all of the
computations and that you formulate conjectures. I'd really like everyone
to do the proofs; I have given you lots of hints. If you have trouble
with anything, please email me, and if you need an extension for a day or
two so that you can come to office hours, just ask.
Email Probems
- Email Problem 1: (due by 5:00 pm on Sunday September 27)
Please send me an email from an account that you
check often (and at which I should email you if I need to email the
class). The subject line must be exactly 325 Introduction. In
the email please tell me
- Your name and if there is a different name that you prefer to be
called
- Your major
- Any math classes you have taken (by number) other than Calculus
- Something interesting about yourself. (For example hobbies,
non-mathematical interests, something fun you did over the summer.) This
only has to be a sentence or so, and it only needs to be interesting to
you (not necessarily to me). I'm just trying to get a sense of my
students, since I don't know most of you.
- A movie, book, or restaurant that you recommend

Notes
Notes (updated 11/11)
Note: These are an outline of the notes from class. They will not always cover
everything we did in class, and there are almost definitely typos. If you find
any mistakes, please let me know.
Class Handouts
- Syllabus
- Review for Midterm 1. Note:
problem 7 is wrong. Instead find the remainder when that number is
divided by 9.
- Review for Midterm 2. Note: Please let
me know if you find typos; I have not carefully proofread this.
