The UAV Lab consists of fixed- and rotary-wing UAVs including a Yamaha R-MAX helicopter, two Thunder-Tiger Raptor 90 helicopters, one Rotomotion SR-100 helicopter, two 12-Foot Telemaster Airplanes, two Micropilot MP-TrainerLRC airplanes, and two twin engine airplanes. These vehicles are being used for flight dynamics and controls research. The Lab also consists of Piccolo autopilots, ground control stations, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environment. Also available for research are Inertial Measurement Units, Single Board Computers, and microcontrollers. The department has recently acquired Stabilized Camera Gimbal, FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) cameras, Video Processing System, and a research quality Autoclave. R-MAX helicopter was donated to the university by the Northrop Grumman Corporation. Other UAVs and equipment items were purchased through a grant from Air Force under Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) and a grant from Department of Defense under Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP).
The UAVs and equipment items are available for interdisciplinary research and for student projects. The UAV Lab provides facilities, tools, equipment, and guidance for individuals and teams from throughout the university. Cooperation between the different disciplines, i.e., Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical & Computer, Engineering Technology, and Computer Science departments is encouraged.
