Spacecraft and Launch Vehicle Laboratory (SLV Lab) was established in September 2010 using a grant from Air Force Research Lab. Planned activities include senior projects, research, and support for the following:
- CubeSat research and development
- Sounding rockets and payloads
- Launch vehicle design
- High-Altitude balloon flights
- CanSat competition www.cansatcompetition.com
2010 CubeSat Senior Project:
- Investigating low-cost attitude control for CubeSats
- Modified model airplane servos for gyroscopic actuators
- On-board gyros and accelerometers measure rotational motion
- Computer sends open- and closed-loop data back to PC for later analysis
- Cal Poly CubeSat Demo ExSat-1 Flown in 0-g on NASA’s Vomit Comet, JSC- Houston
2010 High-Altitude Balloon Flights Senior Project:
- Use to investigate atmospheric properties
- Fly to ~100,000 ft elevation
- Designing “flyback” UAV: UAV will glide back and autonomously return research instrumentation to launch site
