Welcome

ANNOUNCEMENTS - 4.10.14

Welcome friends, current and perspective students, and alumni:

The Department of Architecture is in very high demand and, because of this, it is able to admit very well-qualified students. Our undergraduate program receives over 1500 applications for 120 places, and our graduate program is also highly selective. Cal Poly Pomona architecture graduates are highly sought after by design firms and many gain admittance into highly-selective graduate programs. The popularity of Cal Poly Pomona's architecture program is based, in part, due to its reputation for excellent design instruction, for teaching the technical aspects of architecture, and for its expertise in sustainability, historic preservation, and healthcare design. The architecture department at Cal Poly Pomona is building on these strengths by improving its design, technology and fabrication facilities and by hiring highly-qualified faculty.

Last summer we revamped our design studio space (the IDC). We installed new desks and pin-up partitions (all on casters so that the space can be easily reconfigured). This change has allowed us to increase the capacity of the IDC from 250 to 350 students, which has allowed us to double the number of transfer students we accept. This summer we will be creating two new 1280sf labs: a structures/material technology/environmental controls lab and a very well-equipped digital fabrication lab.

We are also building on these strengths through our faculty. We have recently hired a number of highly qualified faculty, including Assistant Professor Marc Schulitz, a licensed architect in Germany and partner at the award winning firm of Schulitz Architekten GmbH. Prof Schulitz was in charge of numerous international sports arena projects, including the 2006 FIFA World Cup Arena in Hanover and the Lentpark ice and swim stadium in Cologne, Germany. His work has been featured in many international periodicals and books.

Our students continue to win numerous national and regional design awards and scholarships. Most recently our students swept the CASH Awards (the Coalition for Adequate School Housing), winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place (a repeat of last year's sweep).

Below you can read about our upcoming events, and faculty and student accomplishments.

If you are interested in seeing the work of our graduating students our Senior Project / Thesis reviews will be held at the City Market in downtown Los Angeles (http://www.citymarketla2.com) on June 10th and 11th from 9am-5pm.

Welcome to new Assistant Professor Marc Schulitz
Marc received his professional Degree in Architecture from the ETH Zurich in Switzerland in 1999 and has since then worked as an architect in Europe. He has three years studio and lecture teaching experience at the Technical University of Brunswick and has continuously served as a design critic at universities in Germany and Austria.
Marc Schulitz is a licensed architect in Germany and partner at the award winning firm of Schulitz Architekten GmbH. He was in charge of numerous international sports arena projects, including the 2006 FIFA World Cup Arena in Hanover and the Lentpark ice and swim stadium in Cologne, Germany. His work has been featured in international periodicals and books. Schulitz’s firm focuses on delivering designs that are environmentally sustainable in terms of architecture, the integration of building services, and engineering. His Lentpark design was the first ice sports facility to be part of the European Union’s Green Building Program. Mr. Schulitz´s precise knowledge of structural principles has enabled him to move beyond the role of designer and push into the realm of engineering, thus leading him to work closely with internationally renowned engineering firms.

In 2013 the Lentpark project was awarded the IOC/IAKS Award in bronze. The award is sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS). It is the most important international architecture award for sports, leisure and recreational facilities.

Cal Poly Pomona’s architecture programs are among the nation’s best, according to a newly released report.

DesignIntelligence, a bimonthly report published by the Design Futures Council named CPP as one of the Top 20 architecture programs in the US. Cal Poly Pomona Undergraduate program ranked #16. Th eprogram was also named as one of the Top 5 architecture programs in the West. Cal Poly Pomona Undergraduate program ranked #5

Architecture Students Play Wii in Zero-G for NASA Research project

A group of architecture students visited Ellington Field at the Johnson Space Center in Houston this November to participate in NASA's 2013 MUREP Education Flight Program. NASA selected the architecture students (Martin Saet, Garrett Sanne,Brice Colton, Andrew Cartwright, and Brianna Wiley) for their proposal to research how video games are played in space. The week-long trip to Houston included a VIP tour of the Johnson Space Center, some personal time with an astronaut and, of course, the zero-gravity flight.

FACULTY NEWS

Associate Professor and Chair, Sarah Lorenzen will be co-curating an exhibit at the Neutra VDL House entitled Competing Utopias scheduled to open in July 2014.
Competing Utopias is a design collision that should never happen. But somehow, in Los Angeles, in 2014, twenty-five years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it will. This experimental exhibition is a 'mash-up' in the most provocative sense of that word. Its force comes from the clash and fusion of two design cultures that have been kept apart but have been visually connected in ways yet unexamined. This installation will present Cold War modern design from East and West in one context. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Wende Museum and the VDL House / Cal Poly Pomona funded by the Graham Foundation. Stay tuned for more details.
