State and External Support

Cal Poly Pomona prides itself on providing an affordable quality education, offering fees below the nationwide average for state universities; however, the cost of providing a quality education continues to rise, making private fundraising and gifts increasingly significant. Every dollar of support from each donor contributes to Cal Poly Pomona’s mission of providing lifelong learning to students. In 2006-2007, Cal Poly Pomona raised approximately $34 million from external support (non-state or tuition/fees).

Sources of Funding

Although Cal Poly Pomona is a state university, it is not state supported, but state assisted. In fact, state funding has gone down from 66 percent just two years ago to nearly 60 percent. Various sources of funding are critical in augmenting state funding and student fees to allow for an enriching academic experience for students. The following illustrates Cal Poly Pomona’s funding sources from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007:

State Appropriations $142,237,790 60%
Student Tuition & Fees 55,697,150 23.5%
Research Contracts & Grants 14,960,190 6%
Voluntary Contributions & Gifts 10,117,903 4%

Investment & Endowment Income 4,393,515 2%
Investment Income (State) 6,155,340 2.5%
TOTAL $238,220,795 100%
