Prospective Students

First-Time Freshmen (FTF)

Only Fall Term applications accepted from FTF applicants.  You are considered a First-time Freshmen applicant if you: are currently in high school; or have not earned college credit later than the end of the summer immediately following high school graduation.

Transfer Students

Transfer students may apply to enter Fall, Winter, Spring or Summer Quarter. Check CSUMentor.edu for the application periods each quarter.

Transfer Requirements are different depending on whether you are an upper or lower division transfer or an international transfer student.

Upper Division Transfers

If you have completed 60 or more transferable semester college units (90 quarter units) prior to transfer, you are considered an  upper-division transfer student, and the following requirements must be satisfied:

  • Have a college grade-point average of 2.0 or better in all transferable units attempted (2.4 or better for non-California residents);
  • Be in good standing at the last college or university you attended;
  • Have completed or will complete prior to transfer at least 30 semester units (45 quarter units) of general education (GE) requirements with a grade of "C" or better. The 30 semester units must include English composition, oral communication, critical thinking and college-level mathematics;
  • All 60 transferable semester college units must be completed by: end of the previous spring for Fall Quarter*, end of the previous summer for Winter Quarter, end of the previous fall for Spring Quarter, and end of the previous fall for Summer Quarter.

Lower Division Transfers

If you have fewer than 60 transferable semester college units (90 quarter units) prior to transfer, you are considered a lower-division transfer student, and the following requirements must be satisfied:

  • Have a college grade-point average of 2.0 or better in all transferable units attempted (2.4 or better for non-California residents);
  • Be in good standing at the last college or university you attended;
  • Must complete the General Education requirements in Mathematics and Written Communication, unless exempt from taking the ELM and EPT placement tests.  These need to be completed by:

Summer Fall term of previous year
  • Meet the  freshman admission requirements in effect for the term for which application is being made; or
  • Must be eligible as a freshman at the time of high school graduation;  or
  • Had a qualifying eligibility index at the time of high school graduation (combination of GPA and test scores if needed) and has made up any missing college preparatory subject requirements with a grade of C or better. One baccalaureate level course of at least three semester (4 quarter) units is usually considered equivalent to one year of high school study.

*No summer work in Progress is allowed for Fall applicants.

International Transfer Students

You must have 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher in all transferable college course work, and may be subject to additional admission criteria.

Specific Course Requirements for AMM that can be taken before coming to Cal Poly

General Education

  • GE Math = Statistics 120
  • GE Physical Science = Chemistry 121/L or Physics 102
  • GE Art = (ART 110, 211, 212, 213, 214, or 216)
  • GE Foreign Language = Spanish or Chinese

AMM Lower Division Courses

  • AMM 101 = Fashion Industry (4)
  • AMM 160 = Introduction to Textile Science (3)
  • AMM 108 = Culture, People and Dress
  • AMM 210 = Apparel Design Analysis
  • AMM 230 = Fashion Promotion (4)
  • AMM 250 = Apparel Merchandise Buying (4)
  • AMM 270 = Visual Merchandising/ Store Design (4)

All undergraduate students must complete testing requirements unless exempt.

Students changing major to AMM

If you are considering changing your major but still have questions come see Dr. Peter Kilduff, AMM chair please call (909) 869 - 3377 to set up an appointment.  If you have decided to change your major to AMM then you will need to complete the "Change of Major form in the AMM Dept. office, bldg. 45 - 152

Minor in Fashion Merchandising & Management

Pre-admission Advising

Pre-admission advising from our Outreach counselors will help you understand admission requirements, financial aid, scholarships, educational opportunity program (EOP), testing, housing, student life and other areas of interest to prospective students. They also provide educational plans to assist you with courses you will be required to complete to fulfill admission requirements, along with assisting you through the admission process.

 The Transfer Center services approximately 20 community colleges in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the Inland Empire on a regular basis.
