  Ancient seat of the kingdom of Quitu, the largest unit of an Indian tribal confederation that left no recorded history.Between the 10th century and 1487, the Kingdom of Quitu united with the Inca empire, and ruled by the Shyris, sovereigns of the Cara.
 1470?  City fell to the Incas under Tupac Yupanqui
 16c cent..  Inca administrative center territories attached to Tahuantinsuyo;Royal dwellings of Inca rulers Tupac Yupanqui and Huayna Capac
 1533  Ruminahui defeats Cozopanqui (uncle of Atahualpa) and declares himself chief of Quito

 Inca city refounded by Sebastian de Benalcazar (Pizarro's lieutenant).City had been destroyed and evacuated by Inca Ruminahui Inca . Benalcazar is disappointed that no gold is found in Quito. The city has a 20,000 population
 1535  Benalcazar founds Santiago de Guayaquil to provide a harbor to Quito. After his departure, the other Spaniards abandoned the city after an Indian attack.( It was refounded in 1536)
 1539  Gonzalo Pizarro is named Governor of Quito
 1541  The villa de Quito is made a city. the first house with tile roof is built.
 1552  An art school was established in Quito, the first of its kind in South America.
It was the foundation of a religious art movement that flourished throughout the
Spanish colonial period, leaving a wealth of wooden polychrome sculpture and
paintings unequaled in the New World.
 1563  Felipe II established the Real Audiencia of Quito
 1545  Bishopric: 3 convents
 1550-1562  Cathedral was completed
 1563  Seat of the Royal Audiences;it gave Quito political power over other cities under its protection.
