2010 Distinguished Alumni Recipients2010 Distinguished Alumni

Cal Poly Pomona has honored nine outstanding graduates with the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor given by the Alumni Association. Now in its 50th year, the awards program recognizes individuals who demonstrate extraordinary professional achievement, community involvement and service to the university.

Representing each college in the university and athletics, the 2009 recipients were celebrated at the Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet on April 30. In addition, their names will be added to a perpetual plaque on the first floor of Building 1.

The 2010 Distinguished Alumni are:

Dale SternDale Stern, ’84, Agricultural Biology
Frequent visits throughout his childhood to his families’ farms and dairies planted a seed of interest in agriculture in Dale Stern. Years later, he is realizing his dream as an agricultural law attorney. Stern serves as general counsel to more than 50 nonprofit organizations representing many sectors of California’s food industry, ranging from production agriculture to food processors to grocery stores.

John FintonJohn Finton, ’89, Finance, Real Estate and Law
Nicknamed the “Builder without Borders,” John Finton is a prominent figure in Southern California. President and CEO of Finton Construction, Finton is well known in the world of palatial estates. With offices in Los Angeles, Orange County and Mexico, his company specializes in luxury development, building both traditional and contemporary residential homes. His work has now expanded to France, England and Russia.

Mary Louise LabrucherieMary Louise Labrucherie, ’76, Education, Reading Specialist
Through hard work and sustained commitment to student success, Mary Louise Labrucherie led Valle Lindo School District to its high honors as superintendent. The district has won two Golden Bell Awards for curriculum. Two schools in the district have earned the honor of being named a California Distinguished School. And, the district’s 1,200 students consistently score higher on standardized tests than the state and county averages.

Peter S. SilvaPeter S. Silva, ’77, Civil Engineering
After 32 years in the water and wastewater industries, Peter Silva was appointed by President Obama to serve as the assistant administrator for water at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Silva supervises water office programs implementing the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act and provisions of several other laws to prevent water pollution and reduce risks for humans and ecosystems.

Bob WeisBob Weis, ’80, Architecture
As executive vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering, Bob Weis works with creative teams of writers, artists, filmmakers, sculptors, animators, landscape architects, and technical people who all share a common objective: to think beyond daily constraints. He is currently leading an extensive expansion of the Disneyland Resort. He is also head of design for the Disney Shanghai project which recently won approval from the Chinese Central Government.

Kathleen A. DavisKathleen A. Davis, ’77, Kinesiology and Health Promotion
As a nationally recognized expert in sport economics and sport market analysis, Kathleen Davis is at the top of her game. Davis pioneered the concept of applying academic-based survey as a sports-business marketing tool when she started her company, Sport Management Research Institute (SMRI). Nearly 20 years later, SMRI’s clientele includes notable athletic teams and events such as the 2008 Super Bowl, Chicago Bears, New York Giants, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Michael P. PfluegerMichael P. Pflueger, ’70, Applied Mathematics
Michael Pflueger has spent 40 years protecting the security of the United States and recently retired from his post as deputy director for information management and chief information officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency, a combat support agency for the Department of Defense. He was the primary advisor of military intelligence to the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He currently heads Pacific Operations for Science Applications International Corporation.

Margaret BaileyMargaret Bailey, ’86, Hotel and Restaurant Management
Margaret Bailey approaches her career and her life with the heart of a public servant, the wisdom of an executive and the spirit of an athlete. A mother of three and former world triathlon competitor, Bailey is senior vice president at Capital Hotel Management (CHM) in Boston, the largest independent hotel investment management company in the country. She serves as a division leader for CHM’s government services group, which is focused on the business advisory needs of municipal, state and federal land management agencies, as well as state park agencies and municipalities.

Thomas G. IspasThomas G. Ispas, ’78, Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Hard work on the basketball court earned Thomas Ispas a scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona, where he played hoops for four years while studying electrical engineering. As president and owner of Daniel’s Electrical Construction Co., he focuses on providing the highest quality work possible while striving to make the business more productive and efficient. The company handles restoration projects, design and building, and new construction of courthouses, schools, retirement homes and public works infrastructure.
