Fall has arrived at Cal Poly Pomona. Mark your calendars for some special alumni events, including the ribbon cutting of the new College of Business Administration buildings, career fairs and an exclusive Pumpkin Festival preview. This month, PolyAlumni spotlights Carina Hoang, ‘05, MBA, who shares the stories of refugees, including her own, following the end of the Vietnam War.

Carina HoangCarina Hoang
'05, Master's in Business Administration

More than 30 years have passed since Carina Hoang fended off disease, hunger and death as a Vietnamese refugee, but the memories have never faded.

 

Hoang was 12 years old when her father became a political prisoner shortly after the end of the Vietnam War, prompting the rest of the family to fear for their lives. Over the next four years, Hoang attempted to escape the country four times, with each costly effort thwarted by police and crooked boat captains. Finally, in June 1979, Hoang, along with her younger brother and sister, boarded a small wooden boat with 373 others in an attempt to get to safer ground.

Matt's RunSupport Matt's Run
Matt's Run, the annual scholarship 5k walk/run, relies on alumni support for its success. The community event on Saturday, Oct. 13, is seeking donations and individual and corporate sponsors. Volunteers are also needed on the day of the race. Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the 5k, which travels through the campus' scenic landscape and raises money for student scholarships.

New Online Transcript Ordering
The Registrar's Office has a new online system for requesting transcripts. Alumni can order multiple transcripts in one session, use any major credit card and receive real-time order updates by email or text message. Online Transcript Ordering is provided through the National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit organization serving the higher education community. The Registrar's Office will continue to accept in-person transcript requests but will no longer accept fax or mail-in requests.

Become an Alumni Mentor Today!
The e-mentoring program allows students to receive practical career advice. Students can search for mentors by major, occupation or special interest.

September 12 - Calling all D.C. Area Alumni
Back to College Night, sponsored by the California State Society, is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rayburn House Office Building Cafeteria, Capitol Hill. Network with CSU alumni and others who graduated from institutions in California. The event is well-attended by members of the California Congressional Delegation and their staff. RSVP by Sept. 6 to (866) 277-2586.

September 15 - Coastal Cleanup Day
Join thousands of volunteers at the annual Coastal Cleanup Day event. Continental breakfast will be served for alumni, family and friends at 8 a.m. Cleanup starts at 9 a.m. at Huntington State Beach.

September 21 - Ribbon Cutting for College of Business Administration Complex
President Michael Ortiz and Dean Richard Lapidus invite alumni to celebrate the new College of Business Administration Complex and those who have contributed to the college's success. Ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. Parking is free.

September 21 - Evening at the Ball Park
Alumni, family and friends are invited to an evening at Angel Stadium. Pre-game mixer at OC Sports Grill at 5 p.m.

October 6 - Kayak Excursion
You are invited to a kayaking adventure in Huntington Beach with Cal Poly Pomona alumni, family and friends.

October 9 - Fall Career Fair
Network with a variety of employers and learn about employment opportunities and career paths. The fair is from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University Quad.

October 10 - Managing Your Finances Workshop
Balancing your financial obligations can be difficult and confusing at times. Learn about the philosophy of savings, savings strategies, tools for developing a budget, plugging spending leaks and preparing for financial emergencies. Workshop is at 6 p.m. at the Bronco Student Center.

October 10 - Engineering/High Tech Career Fair
Learn about employment opportunities from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University Quad.

October 13 - Matt's Run
Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the 5k, which travels through the campus' scenic landscape and raises money for student scholarships.

October 18 - Exclusive Pumpkin Festival Preview
Alumni Association members are invited to enjoy the pumpkin field and corn maze at the Farm Store at 5:30 p.m. BBQ dinner available for purchase. Parking is free.

October 20 & 21 - Pumpkin Festival
Experience a day of farm life at the 20th annual Pumpkin Festival at the Farm Store. The weekend event boasts food vendors, petting zoo, horse rides, children's games, live entertainment, pancake breakfast and pumpkins starting at $5 apiece. The festival is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking in Lot B are free. For more information, call the Pumpkin Festival Hotline at (909) 869-2215.
