It certainly feels like summer in Southern California, but fall quarter is just a few weeks ago. The new academic year brings new reasons for alumni to go back to school. Theatre students will be staging “Hamlet,” throughout September, art faculty will exhibit their work in the University Art Gallery, and the ever-popular Pumpkin Festival returns in mid-October. This issue of Poly Alumni spotlights Danielle Law (’07, international business & marketing), who talks about her venture into the world of gourmet food trucks.

Cal Poly Pomona Alumni AssociationAlumni Association Annual Meeting
September 10 – The Alumni Association will be hosting its annual meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Join fellow alumni for an evening of networking, meet the association’s board of directors and learn about what is happening in the Alumni Association and your alma mater. The meeting will be held at the historic Kellogg House Pomona. For questions, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at cpalumni@csupomona.edu or (909) 869-2963.

Shakespeare Festival Presents ‘Hamlet’
September 11-October 3 – Cal Poly Pomona students and professional actors will present Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “Hamlet.” The festival will explore themes of revenge, madness, grief, treachery and corruption from a modern perspective. For more information, visit the Theater Department website.

Downtown Los Angeles Alumni Mixer
September 13 – The Collins College Alumni Chapter invites all HRT alumni to join them from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for a free mixer at Café Pinot at 700 West Fifth Street, Los Angeles. The chapter and alumna Perri Ann Shindler ('08) will host. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Please RSVP to the chapter's Facebook page or e-mail lcmcpheron@csupomona.edu.

‘Back to College Night’ in Washington D.C.
September 15 – The California State Society (CSS) will host its seventh annual “Back to College Night,” a fun, casual event on Capitol Hill that celebrates California’s institutions of higher education. Attendees are encouraged to show their school spirit, renew old rivalries and forge new friendships. Food, beverages and activities will be provided. In 2009, more than 400 people attended, many of whom were members of the California delegation, and Hill staff who are California college alumni, and Cal Poly Pomona representatives. The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Rayburn House Office Building Cafeteria, Independence Avenue & South Capitol Street, SE. Space is limited. 'Faculty Show' at W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery
September 21-October 21 – Art department faculty will exhibit their work at a “Faculty Show” at the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery. The gallery will also include special sabbatical exhibitions by Eileen Fears and Crystal Yachin Lee. Participating faculty also include Jensen Barnes, Melissa Flicker, Charles Frederick, Joyce Hesselgrave, Sue Huang, David Hylton, Raymond Kampf, Jessica Ku, Alyssa Lang, Babette Mayor, Sarah Meyer, Desmond McVay, Ann Phong, Lily Simonson, Karen Sullivan, Deane Swick, Barbara Thomason.  An opening reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. Read more...

Evening at the Ball Park
September 24 – The College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter is sponsoring its annual Evening at the Ball Park for an evening of networking, great food and baseball at Angel Stadium. The $40 ticket price includes a private reception, dinner and a seat in the field box level ($63 value). Please RSVP by September 10. To register or more info, click here.

Cal Poly Pomona Day at L.A. County Fair
September 24 – The L.A. County Fair celebrates Cal Poly Pomona Day on Sept. 24. Alumni who bring the flyer will receive $5 admission. The fair runs from Sept. 4 through Oct. 3. For more information about the fair, visit www.lacountyfair.com.

Golf TournamentAlumni Association Golf Tournament
September 27 – Join the Alumni Association for a round of golf at the annual Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association Golf Tournament. Help recognize outstanding student leaders and provide scholarships to deserving students in this time of great need. This year's golf tournament will be held at a private golf course, South Hills Country Club in West Covina. Frank Lectureship Features Jim Collins, Recognizes RKR’s 20th Anniversary
October 5 – The Collins College of Hospitality Management invites its alumni and friends to a special Richard N. Frank Distinguished Lectureship with Jim Collins on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Professor Edward Merritt will moderate the fireside chat, which will focus on the 20th anniversary of The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. Speed Networking for Collins Alumni
October 12 – The Collins Hospitality Society invites HRT alumni to be mentors to students at a fast-paced and fun speed networking event on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Buca di Beppo, 505 W. Foothill Blvd., Claremont at 7 p.m. Paisano Partner for Buca di Beppo Jason Farned ('04) is organizing the evening event. If you are interested in attending, email jasonfarned@aol.com.

Pumpkin FestivalExclusive Pumpkin Festival Event
October 14 – Beat the crowds and enjoy the Farm Store’s pumpkin field with alumni, family and friends. All Alumni Association members are invited to this free pre-festival event, hosted by the College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter. The event begins at 6 p.m. A BBQ dinner is available for $5. For more information and to RSVP, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at (909) 869-2963 or cpalumni@csupomona.edu.

Matt’s Run
October 16 – The 5th Annual Matthews Myers 5k Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. at the Arabian Horse Center. This event supports the Matthew Myers Memorial Fund, which provides scholarships to students who are determined to walk their course in the midst of difficulties. Legal Professionals Needed at Mentoring Event
October 16 – Alumni working in the legal field are invited to mentor pre-law students at a workshop sponsored by the C.L.A.S.S. Alumni Chapter. During the one-hour event, mentors will advise students in writing a personal statement for law school and give tips on becoming a successful law student. Contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at (909) 869-2963 or cpalumni@csupomona.edu to participate.

Pumpkin FestivalPumpkin Festival
October 16-17– The College of Agriculture hosts the annual Pumpkin Festival at AGRIscapes, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities include a pick-your-own pumpkin from the patch, insect fair, petting zoo, face painting, child-size hay maze, horse rides, entertainment, pancake breakfast (Saturday morning), and a variety of food and game booths sponsored by student clubs. Cal Poly Pomona grown produce will be available from the Farm Store. Admission is free. Proceeds from the weekend event help support farm laboratories and student activities, including participation in regional, state and national competitions, attendance at professional meetings, and field trips.

Young Alumni Career Development Workshop
October 19 – Network with professionals and learn about navigating today’s job market at the Young Alumni Career Development Workshop at Kellogg West, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event includes job recruiting, networking and a panel discussion on “How to Reinvent Yourself! Career DayFall Career Day
October 27 – Bring your resume and dress to impress at Fall Career Day, where more than 160 prospective employers will recruit, provide information and conduct on-the-spot interviews. Danielle Law
’07, International Business and Marketing

Danielle LawFood trucks, known for reheated breakfast burritos, greasy burgers and other fast food options, might seem like an odd place to encounter French cuisine, but a Cal Poly Pomona alumna is working hard to change that perception. She showed off her skills on a national stage in a new Food Network show which premiered on Aug. 15.

Danielle Law ('07, international business & marketing) represents Crepes Bonaparte, a Fullerton-based catering business that's riding a wave of popularity for mobile kitchens featuring gourmet menus. With her husband, Christian Murcia, and his childhood friend Matthew Meyer, Law brings French crepes -- thin, delicate pancakes infused with sweet or savory fillings - to the streets of Southern California. W.K. KelloggCal Poly Pomona Benefits from Unprecedented Gift from W.K. Kellogg Foundation
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded $42 million for an endowment at Cal Poly Pomona to increase access to educational opportunities, the largest cash gift in the history of the California State University system. "In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of our founder, W.K. Kellogg, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation is proud that this grant will benefit Cal Poly Pomona in its efforts to extend and bolster educational opportunities for current and aspiring students," said Sterling K. Coach Greg KamanskyBroncos Take on Duke in Exhibition Game Nov. 4
"Coach K" has been a moniker for Broncos head coach Greg Kamansky since he stepped on to Cal Poly Pomona's campus in the late 1990s as an assistant coach. On Nov. 4, Kamansky and his defending NCAA Division II champion Broncos will face the defending NCAA Divison I champion Duke University Blue Devils and their Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski - "Coach K'' - in an exhibition game at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern time (4 p.m. Pacific). Read more...

Alumni Professors Back with a Passion
"I walked these halls as an uncertain undergrad," remembers Jack Fong. "I thought I'd be a 9-to-5 worker in the corporate world." A 1992 communications alumnus, Fong was unsure of his future through most of college. Never did he imagine that he would become a professor at Cal Poly Pomona 15 years later. In the final quarter of his senior year, Fong took an elective urban sociology class around the time of the Los Angeles riots. A week after it ended, sociology Professor Gary Cretser lectured on-site in South Los Angeles. Read more...

U.S. News & World ReportCal Poly Pomona Ranked Among Best in the West
U.S. News & World Report has again recognized Cal Poly Pomona as one of the best public regional universities in the West. The university was tied for seventh among non-doctorate granting institutions, according to the magazine's 2011 "Best Colleges" rankings. Among both public and private regional universities Cal Poly Pomona tied for 32nd in the West, the same position it held last year. The category comprises 15 states, from California to Texas and Alaska to Hawaii. Read more...

Long before James Williamson became a high-power exec at Sony, he made his mark in rock ‘n’ roll as the guitarist for the Stooges. After retiring from Sony last year, he rejoined the band for a tour. Williamson earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1982. Read more...
