Jonnie Owens
’01, Behavioral Science
Jonnie Owens remembers a time when university employees were allowed to smoke at their desks, when discussion of sexual orientation was still taboo, and when cultural centers were not part of the campus landscape.
Owens, who retired in July, had multiple roles in her nearly 25 years on campus and says she always had one goal in mind: helping students. Using skills she gained in motherhood, her education and life, Owens played an important role in the founding of some significant campus programs.
"Many times I drew upon life experiences to help students," says Owens, who earned her bachelor’s degree in 2001 in behavioral science. "I took responsibility for educating myself and seeking out information and resources when what I needed was not readily available." Continue reading about Jonnie Owens... |

Cal Poly Pomona to Admit Students in Winter, Spring
Cal Poly Pomona and other CSU schools will admit new students for the 2011 winter and spring quarters, a change of policy that reflects an infusion of federal stimulus money and a sense of optimism that legislators will restore funding for higher education in the state budget. Winter and spring admissions were eliminated last academic year because of the state budget crisis, forcing qualified students to apply for the 2010 fall term. Transfer student applications for fall 2010 nearly doubled at Cal Poly Pomona, while first-time freshman applications increased more than 10 percent. Read more...

Matt's Run, which marks its fifth year at Cal Poly Pomona, has become an annual fall tradition among students, faculty, staff and area residents to celebrate education and community. Read more...
CSU Approves Proposal to Replace CLA
The CSU Board of Trustees has approved a proposal to replace the CLA complex with a new student services building. The board action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, sets in motion a process that will start with design proposals next year, move to the construction phase in 2013 and conclude 18 to 24 months later with a student services building that is much easier to navigate than the CLA. The money to build the facility will come from the CSU Capital Outlay Program utilizing state construction bonds. The project will not impact the university's general fund budget. Read more...
