Fall quarter is in full swing, and two popular annual events are just a couple of weeks away. The Matthew Myers Memorial 5K, which supports student scholarships, and the family-friendly Pumpkin Festival take place on the weekend of Oct. 18-19. Fall quarter also brings several opportunities to network with alumni and community leaders during the Career Fair and guest speaker events. This issue of Poly @lumni also highlights Rene Trevino ’78, architecture, who has made energy conservation a way of life at the Navy Region Southwest, where he serves as executive director.

Distinguished Lectureship Series at The Collins College
October 14 Jon L. Luther, CEO of Dunkin' Brands, will give the annual lecture in the Richard N. Frank Distinguished Lectureship Series at The Collins College of Hospitality Management. Luther's lecture will be followed by a Q&A session from 1 to 2 p.m. in the college’s Wine Auditorium. The lectureship series was established in 1988 to enable respected industry professionals to spend a few days to several weeks teaching, lecturing and interacting with students, faculty and other professionals interested in the goals of The Collins College. Career Fair
October 16 Make valuable connections at this large, outdoor job fair. More than 200 leading, nationally recognized employers will participate. The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Quad. All majors, class levels and alumni are welcome. Bring resumes, and dress to impress. Matt's Run
October 18 The third annual Matthew Myers Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be held at Cal Poly Pomona. Entry fees go towards the Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship Fund. To learn more about this USATF-certified run, please visit www.mattsrun.org.
16th Annual Pumpkin Festival
October 18-19 The College of Agriculture's 16th annual Pumpkin Festival will take place Oct. 18-19. Activities include: Insect Fair, petting zoo, horse rides, entertainment, and a variety of food and game booths sponsored by student clubs. Visitors can pick pumpkins out of the patch and purchase Cal Poly Pomona grown produce and ornamental plants, plus a variety of gift items from the Farm Store. Admission to the festival is free. Individual activities will have a small fee. Proceeds from this event support student activities and the college's farm laboratory. Out for Blood III
October 28-30 The American Red Cross will host a blood drive competition between Cal Poly Pomona and Mt. SAC from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Ursa Major C. Last year, Cal Poly Pomona won the competition and expects to continue its winning tradition. To reserve an appointment time, visit www.givelife.com and enter sponsor code “CALPOLY.” Let’s show Mt. CBA Kicks Off Speaker Series with Renown Economist Jack Kyser
November 6 Jack Kyser, senior vice president and chief economist for the L.A. County Economic Development Corporation will lead off the Executive Speaker Series for the 2008-09 academic year. Co-sponsored by the College of Business Administration Chapter of the Alumni Association and the College of Business Administration, the prestigious Executive Speaker Series invites industry leaders to three evening events to discuss timely topics such as the economy, technology and information security. Rene Trevino '78, Architecture
For service members at the Navy Region Southwest, the notable sustainability program is simply "a way of life." Executive Director Rene Trevino has played a significant role in implementing that way of life – environmentally sound practices he views as simple, sensible and cost effective. The methods have been so successful that many are now being put into service throughout the Navy.
The Navy Region Southwest's successful energy conservation program has reduced overall consumption by 12 percent in the past year.
Water consumption is down by one billion gallons in the last several years, including more than 300 million gallons last year. Under Trevino's direction, the Navy installed an extensive Xeriscape program that has reduced water consumption and landscape maintenance costs. Read more... |

University Library Hosts Grand Opening and Reception
The campus community celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated University Library on Monday, Sept. 22. President Michael Ortiz and Library Dean Harold Schleifer welcomed faculty, staff and students to enjoy the completion of the two-year, $58.5 million addition and renovation project. Read more...
Ortiz Looks Forward in Convocation Speech
Entering its 70th year this fall, Cal Poly Pomona hosted the annual Fall Conference Convocation Sept. 22 for faculty and staff to celebrate the university's rich history and look forward to the new academic year. The College of Business Administration has launched a new website that will make it easier for the college community to stay connected. Collins College Alumni Chapter Election Underway All active chapter members will receive a nomination postcard in the mail this month.
