Mark your calendars! A number of special musical and theater performances are scheduled for the next few weeks, including the very popular community concert of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in December. Also, music professor Nadia Shpachenko and the up-and-coming Biava Quartet will give a special early performance of a piano quintet before its official premiere in New York. Faces, A One-Person Play
November 6 Through the Michi & Walter Weglyn Endowed Chair of Muticultural Studies, the Multicultural Council and Office of Student Life presents “Faces of America,” a one-person play about nine real accounts of growing up in America in terms of race, class and sexual orientation. The show is performed by Will and Co. Presented in almost every state, “Faces” has been added to several universities' regular curriculum as well as to corporate and government diversity training programs. Alumni Mixer in Manhattan
November 9 All alumni in the Tristate area or those in town for the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show are invited to attend an alumni mixer at the Red Lobster in Times Square. The mixer is hosted by Cal Poly Pomona President J. Michael Ortiz and Collins College Dean Andrew Hale Feinstein. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be provided. ARI Research Showcase
November 13 The Cal Poly Pomona Agricultural Research Initiative (ARI) 8th Annual Research Showcase will feature ARI-sponsored scientists and research projects. Learn more about the research being conducted by faculty, staff and students that help improve the agriculture industry in California. The showcase will include oral and poster presentations by ARI researchers and students. It will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in AGRIscapes. For more info, contact (909) 869-3637.
Nadia Shpachenko and the Biava String Quartet
November 14 Enjoy an evening with acclaimed musicians: Nadia Shpachenko, piano; Austin Hartman, violin; Hyunsu Ko, violin; Mary Persin, viola; and Jason Calloway, cello. They will perform Piano Quartet in G minor by W. A. Mozart, Piano Quintet in A Major by A. Dvorak, and Piano Quintet "Epilogue" by A. Shchetynsky, which was commissioned by Nadia Shpachenko and the Biava Quartet. The event is from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students. An Evening with Nellie McKay
November 20 Performer, songwriter and activist Nellie McKay presents an evening of music including songs from her new album “Obligatory Villagers.” McKay is noted for her critically acclaimed debut album "Get Away from Me" and for her Broadway debut in The Threepenny Opera (2006), for which she won a Theatre World Award. Her music showcases different genres, from jazz to rap to disco, and her eclectic style and sharp lyrics distinguish her as an original voice. Family Fun Day
November 22 Family Fun Day at the Downtown Center features activities centered on ancient communities and civilization. Art, storytelling, face painting, healthy snacks and other fun activities will be available. Every child attending will receive a free book. 'Feel the Music' L.A. Philharmonic Concert
December 18 This special holiday concert features Vaughn Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves; Mozart's Excultate Jubilate, featuring a local soprano; and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite No. 1. This 10th community concert of the L.A. Philharmonic in Pomona is sponsored by the Cultural Alliance, which includes representatives from Cal Poly Pomona, the City of Pomona, Pomona Unified School District, Pomona First Baptist Church and Western University of Health Sciences. Saving Faces, Changing Lives
Dr. Larry Moore '76, Microbiology
The work of oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Larry Moore brings smiles to patients of his Chino Hills office and to people across the country who benefit from his advocacy efforts.
At his office, the Chino Hills Oral Surgery Center, and at local hospitals, Moore performs oral and maxillofacial surgery to relieve pain and correct a wide variety of tooth and jaw problems. In his leadership role with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), Moore promotes access to care for reconstructive surgery on birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate. $4.1 Million Grant Smoothes Bumps on the Road to a Degree in STEM Disciplines
The U.S. Department of Education has provided Cal Poly Pomona with a $4.1 million grant to help the university address the national shortage of professionals ready to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This funding was made available through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007, which has been said to provide the single largest increase in college aid since the GI bill, including $200 million of support to Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). Records Fall at Matt's Run
The third annual Matthew Myers Memorial 5K Run/Walk proved to be a record year at every level. The run boasted the largest turnout to date with 635 runners and walkers beginning the race on Oct. 18. The event raised more than $30,000 to support scholarships for Cal Poly Pomona students. Read more...
Landscape Architecture Students Design for Excellence
Cal Poly Pomona's landscape architecture students captured five awards in the 2008 Student Awards competition hosted by the American Society of Landscape Architecture. The department won more awards than any other university in the prestigious international competition, outperforming Harvard University Graduate School of Design and University of Pennsylvania School of Design. Schwarzenegger Announces Partnership to Power CSU Campuses with Solar Energy
In an effort to reduce California's greenhouse gas emissions, Gov. Schwarzenegger announced the state has partnered with SunEdison to provide affordable solar power at 15 California State University campuses, including Cal Poly Pomona, and the CSU executive office. This innovative public-private partnership will protect the environment by providing a zero-emission 8 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power system to the California state university campuses. Caligiuri named to 50th Anniversary Team
Men's soccer coach Paul Caligiuri is one of 11 former student-athletes and one coach to have been named to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer 50th Anniversary Team. More than 100 student-athletes were considered to be on the team. According to an NCAA press release, more than 100 student-athletes and 10 head coaches were considered for the team. The list was narrowed down to 32 and six, respectively, through a voting subcommittee. Read more...

New Finite Element Analysis Program
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has become an important tool in the product design process for companies of all types. Knowing how to eliminate design flaws before they occur not only saves time, it also saves an untold amount of money, resources and manpower. Fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis for Mechanical Design Using NASTRAN is the first course in the new Finite Element Series offered by the College of the Extended University. This course is designed for beginner to intermediate users as well as for those currently using FEA who want to improve their skills. The course will be offered Dec. 16-18.
