April 2012
In This Issue

As we move from spring to summer, our thoughts turn toward Commencement and the many festivities of the season. A couple of weeks ago, we honored this year’s distinguished alumni, a group of extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated success in their profession and in service. Last weekend, about 900 alumni and university friends supported Cal Poly Pomona at the 5th annual Southern California Tasting & Auction. We’re looking forward to the many more celebrations to come.

TastingGuests Enjoy Food, Wine, Auctions at Fundraiser
The fifth annual Southern California Tasting & Auction attracted about 900 guests who sampled food, wine and beer from 44 of the region’s finest restaurants, wineries and breweries. The event, held on May 6, raised more than $150,000 for scholarships and academic initiatives. The event auctioned off unique opportunities such as a weeklong residential study experience in Tuscany as well as high-demand sports memorabilia like an autographed 2012 Lakers team basketball. For the first time, chefs from two well-known restaurants gave cooking demonstrations during the event. Next year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, May 5.

RosefloatRose Float Team Prepares for Takeoff
Flying penguins -- at least penguins attempting to fly -- will be the concept of the Cal Poly Universities' float in the 2013 Rose Parade. "We wanted a main focal image that was cute, fun and creative," says Jackie Sorensen, design chair for the Rose Float Committee. "Penguins come across as cute and adorable. This will be the third float in our history with penguins."

Serving Those Who Served
As more troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, colleges and universities across the country are preparing for an influx of veterans who have different needs and expectations than traditional 18-year-old freshmen and community college transfer students. The growing number of veteran students is challenging universities to listen, be flexible and find ways to help them succeed.

Advocacy
CSU to Curb Enrollment
State support for the California State University has been cut by almost $1 billion or 33% over the past 18 months. Increases in student tuition revenues cover only about half of the lost revenue, leaving CSU more than half a billion dollars in the hole. The CSU is struggling to maintain access and quality in light of these state funding cuts. The consequences of losing nearly a $1 billion in support are real, far-reaching and being felt throughout the system, but especially by students and their families. The tough choices the university is being forced to make will only get more difficult if state leaders continue to cut the CSU's budget.
