Governor's May Revision Ties $1 Billion CSU Cut to Tax Extensions
Governor Brown's May Revision of the state budget proposes an additional reduction of $500 million in state funding support for the California State University, bringing the total budget reduction to $1 billion, if his proposal for temporary tax extensions is rejected. That would represent a 36 percent year-over-year reduction in state funding for the largest public university system in the country with more than 412,000 students. The legislature had earlier approved an initial $500 million cut in state support to the CSU for the 2011-12 fiscal year that starts July 1.
$3 Million ENV Gift to Elevate Modern Architecture Studies
Steve and Marian Dodge, longtime supporters of the university and patrons of modern architecture, have pledged $3 million through a bequest gift to advance the study of modern architecture in the College of Environmental Design. Their bequest includes their Los Feliz home, an architecturally significant building designed by architect Raphael Soriano. "The forward thinking of Steve and Marian is a testament to their long-term vision and their commitment to supporting higher education," says Dean Michael Woo.
Campus Continues Excellence in Sustainability
For the second year in a row, The Princeton Review has recognized Cal Poly Pomona for its dedication to green improvements. The university and its sustainable achievements are featured in the "Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition." "It's a real honor to be recognized in the Guide to Green Colleges. The 2010 edition was the first of its kind from The Princeton Review, and we were pleasantly surprised to learn of our inclusion in that publication," says Meaghan Smith, manager of sustainability in Facilities Planning & Management.
Developing Strong Minds and Bodies
Cal Poly Pomona athletes have a tradition of success, winning more national team titles than any other current Division II campus in California. While the students' athletic abilities put them in the spotlight, they often excel in the classroom as well. Last summer, 40 student-athletes earned California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Awards. Among other requirements, those recognized maintained a minimum 3.4 grade-point average — no easy feat for students who balance coursework with training, intense competition and travel.
