Spring is always an exciting time at Cal Poly Pomona for graduating students, their friends and families, faculty and staff. Commencement ceremonies will be held June 11-13, and they will also be webcast live. If you know a 2010 graduate, be sure to offer congratulations and welcome them to the alumni community. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights nine individuals who were honored as the 2010 Distinguished Alumni.

Cultural Centers Celebrations
May 14-June 6 – Several cultural graduation ceremonies are planned for the Class of 2010. For more information, visit www.csupomona.edu/~commencement/cultural.shtml.

2nd Annual Chicago Alumni Mixer
May 23 – Cal Poly Pomona alumni are invited to an Alumni Champagne Reception on Sunday, May 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hotel Felix, 111 W. Huron Street in Downtown Chicago. Join fellow alumni as we honor Collins College of Hospitality Management Professor Jerry Chesser for being inducted into the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation's College of Diplomates. The event is free and hosted by Andy Feinstein, dean of The Collins College, and alumna Eva Wassermann, '86, and her husband Roger Hill. Tasting & AuctionCommencement 2010
June 11-13 – The 54th Annual Commencement Ceremonies will take place in the University Quad. Alumni and friends are invited to attend in person or view the pomp and circumstance online through a live webcast. For a schedule of ceremonies, visit www.csupomona.edu/commencement.

Legends Of IBM Banquet
June 12 – The IBM department invites all alumni to the Legends of IBM banquet at the Bronco Student Center. The event will honor Professor Emeritus Andrew J. Thacker for more than 20 years of service to Cal Poly Pomona, his development of the IBM department, enriching students lives and numerous achievements. Save the Date – 2nd Annual Alumni in the Outfield
July 30 – The Collins College of Hospitality Management Alumni Chapter invites all hotel and restaurant management alumni, faculty and staff to an evening at the ballpark. Join the chapter for a pre-game party at OC Sports Grill at 5 p.m. and a game at 7:05 p.m. on July 30 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

2010 Distinguished Alumni Recipients2010 Distinguished Alumni

Cal Poly Pomona has honored nine outstanding graduates with the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor given by the Alumni Association. Now in its 50th year, the awards program recognizes individuals who demonstrate extraordinary professional achievement, community involvement and service to the university.

Representing each college in the university and athletics, the 2009 recipients were celebrated at the Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet on April 30. In addition, their names will be added to a perpetual plaque on the first floor of Building 1. Read more...

Professor Junjun LiuGrant Boosts Cell Biology Research
Professor Junjun Liu, biological sciences department, has received a $409,200 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for his cancer-related research. The three-year grant helps Liu study a regulatory mechanism mediated by polo-like kinase, which controls progression of cell cycle. The enzyme indirectly regulates the modification of chromatin, which is a key mechanism in stem cell differentiation and the formation of tumors. Escalated levels of the enzyme have been found to cause cancer and other diseases. Read more...

Like many people in this economy, Rodney Dor, ’06, computer information systems, found himself without a job despite expertise in information technology and years of leadership experience. The major benefits of the 23 California State University campuses are felt by communities throughout the state, and a recent report shows just how much of an economic, technological, social and environmental impact the CSU makes statewide.The report, "Working for California: The Impact of the California State University System," underscores that the dynamic, knowledge-based economy that California enjoys can be directly tied to the investment in world-class public higher education.
