It felt like yesterday when another academic year was just beginning. Now, spring quarter is quickly coming to a close, and commencement for the Class of 2009 is only four short weeks away. The commencement ceremonies will take place over three days between June 12 and 14. Several cultural organizations have planned celebrations between June 4 and 7. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights our nine Distinguished Alumni who were honored by university President Michael Ortiz and the Alumni Association on April 24.

Events

Chicago Alumni Mixer
May 17 – The Collins College of Hospitality Management invites all alumni in the Chicago area or those in town for the National Restaurant Show to a reception on Sunday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the newly renovated Hotel Felix in downtown Chicago. This boutique hotel is downtown Chicago’s first hotel that meets Silver LEED certification. President Michael Ortiz and Betty Ortiz will be attending. Dean Andy Feinstein, alumna Eva Wassermann and her husband, Roger Hill, are hosting the event. RSVP to lcmcpheron@csupomona.edu.

June 4-7 – Several cultural graduation ceremonies are planned for the Class of 2009. For more information, visit www.csupomona.edu/~commencement/cultural.shtml.

Sleep: A S'Real S'Rvey of the Nightscape
June 5 – Directed by Peter Yates, the Guitar Ensemble will host a presentation in which dreams are the subject. "Sleep: a S'Real S'Rvey of the Nightscape" is a musical theater production with storytellers, dancers, video puppets, microtonal guitars and percussion. The piece draws its inspiration from variety shows, dance recitals, poetry readings, traditional theater, and world and classical music. The show begins at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets can be purchased at http://csupomona.tix.com or through the Music Publicity Office, Building 24, room 142. 53rd Annual Commencement
June 12-14 – The 53rd Annual Commencement Ceremonies will take place in the University Quad. Alumni and friends are invited to attend in person or view the pomp and circumstance online through a live webcast. For a schedule of ceremonies, visit www.csupomona.edu/commencement.

Raices (Hispanic) Alumni Chapter Soccer Social
July 11 – If you are member of the Raices alumni chapter or are interested in learning more about this dynamic group, you won’t want to miss this event. The chapter is planning to go to the Chivas USA vs. L.A. Galaxy game on Saturday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Home Depot Center. Classroom Management Workshop

2009 Distinguished Alumni2009 Distinguished Alumni

Cal Poly Pomona has honored nine outstanding graduates with the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor given by the Alumni Association. Now in its 49th year, the awards program recognizes alumni who demonstrate extraordinary professional achievement, community involvement and service to the university.

Representing each college in the university and athletics, the 2009 recipients were celebrated at the Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet on April 24. In addition, their names will be added to a perpetual plaque on the first floor of Building 1. Read more...

Campus Receives Recycling Award
Every can and bottle counts when it comes to recycling. In fact, the campus recycled about 3,500 tons of waste last year — that's about 300 pounds per person. Recognizing that achievement, the Los Angeles Regional Agency (LARA) has presented the university with the Excellence in Environmental Practices Award. A consortium of 16 member cities, LARA's mission is to help members divert waste from the landfill. Read more...

Business Building Project to Resume Construction
The College of Business Administration is moving forward with plans to build a $33 million business complex that will provide students with the latest in instructional technology. The three-building complex will include a faculty and student services building, an Einstein Bros. Bagel shop, and a 200-seat Gregoire Family Auditorium. Read more...

The Cinderella story of Cal Poly Pomona's Men's Basketball Team caught the attention of the entire nation this spring. Their determination and success didn't go unnoticed at the state capital either.
