No matter what industry you work in, networking is a valuable way to develop business contacts, make friends and expand your career potential. There are several opportunities over the next month to meet alumni, community members and university friends at various events. This month, Poly @lumni introduces a new section, “Alumni in the News,” which will highlight people who have made headlines in print and online. This issue also spotlights a group of CIS students who studied together and competed together on the university’s cyber defense team. Now, they all work together at Boeing, one of the most prominent defense contractors in the country.

Communications Alumni Reunion

Shape-Shifting Guitars
March 5 Peter Yates presents a chamber-music concert with faculty collaborators Nadia Shpachenko, Janine Riveire, Dave Kopplin, and Buzz Gravelle, and guest artists Tom Flaherty, cello; Cynthia Fogg, viola; Abigail Villalta, voice; Matthew Elgart, guitar; and Richard Kravchak, oboe. Ink and Clay 36 Opening Reception
March 21 Cal Poly Pomona presents the annual competition of ceramics, prints and drawings at the W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery. The 2010 exhibit marks the 36th anniversary of Ink and Clay. This year’s competition was juried by Leslie Jones, associate curator of prints and drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Elaine Levin, art historian, independent curator and author. Boeing Hires Six Graduating Members of Cyber Security Team
When eight computer information systems (CIS) students entered a Cal Poly Pomona-sponsored competition last year, the goal was to win bragging rights as one of the best cyber security universities in the Western United States.
They fulfilled that goal and then some.
Six of the former teammates are now coworkers at Boeing, one of the prominent defense contractors in the country. In a rare hiring move, Boeing recruited all graduating members of Cal Poly Pomona‘s cyber defense team to work in its Anaheim office. They began their careers one month after graduation in June. Mike Scioscia Fundraiser Energizes Baseball Team
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team kicked off its 2010 season with some major league fans its corner. At a fundraiser dinner on Feb. 6, athletics director Brian Swanson announced the largest gift in team history - $105,000 to improve Scolinos field from baseball alumnus Daniel Andrews. The donation was just one of many highlights of the evening. Read more...
Broncos Capture CCAA Title
The Broncos have put together a run for the ages, earning a school-record 13th straight win and capping their second-straight California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title with a dominating 77-54 victory over San Francisco State on Friday. "To play so well tonight against a well-coached team like San Francisco State that you know is going to fight to the very end, is incredibly gratifying," said head basketball coach Greg Kamansky, who won his third CCAA title in his 10 years. "It never got less than 14 in the second half and they never let up." Read more...
Rose Float Program Receives Proclamation from City of Covina
Mayor Walter Allen, ’75 alumnus of Cal Poly Pomona, recognized the Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Program on Feb. 16, during a city council meeting for its award-winning legacy and elevating the San Gabriel Valley. When the float made its return trip from Pasadena to Cal Poly Pomona, it made a pit stop in Covina on Jan. 3, and Allen formally greeted the students and welcomed them on behalf of the city.
