Alumni Spotlight

Jasen Powell
’95, Kinesiology

Jasen PowellFor Jasen Powell (’95, kinesiology), having such an integral role in the physical well-being of professional athletes is almost as enjoyable as being one.

Powell is in his 12th year as head athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I love sports,” Powell says. “I’m able to do a job that allows me to be around sports and indulge in the environment.”

Powell helps coordinate and arrange every practice and health regiment the players need to stay healthy. He is also the first athletic trainer in the NBA to have collegiate playing experience.

“You need to provide the best service you can for athletes” Powell says, “whether it’s pro, college, high school or even little league.”

Chris AguilarEngineered to Succeed
Civil engineering senior Chris Aguilar walks through the geotechnical lab in Building 17 with the fondness of a long-time pal and the pride of a satisfied customer. Each piece of equipment is part of his college success story that helped him earn his first job. "Look at this lab," says Aguilar, pointing to the shear machine. "Other schools don't have this equipment." After Aguilar walked across the commencement stage in June, he immediately started working full time as a staff engineer in the Burbank office of Geocon West, a civil engineering consulting firm.

Cycling ClubCycling Club Gives Back
Riding a bike can be a great source of exercise, an outlet for competition or a way to connect with friends. The Cal Poly Pomona Cycling Club is open to anyone on campus interested in road biking, mountain biking or recreational cycling. The club offers free minor bicycle repairs once a month during U-hour to students, faculty and staff. At a bicycle shop, these repairs normally cost around $20. "We ask ASI for money for repairs and we go buy tools and parts to work on students' bicycles, so we're essentially giving back a free service for them," says the club advisor, David Flores.

State Budget Reduces Funding for CSU by at Least $650 Million
CSU logoThe 2011-12 budget will reduce state funding to the California State University by at least $650 million and proposes an additional mid-year cut of $100 million if state revenue forecasts are not met. A $650 million cut reduces General Fund support for the university to $2.1 billion and will represent a 23 percent year over year cut to the system. An additional cut of $100 million would reduce CSU funding to $2 billion and represent a 27 percent year-to-year reduction in state support.
