It’s summer time! Join alumni and friends at two upcoming Angels baseball games. The Farm Store is offering two events for gardening enthusiasts to show off their bounty and learn new methods. Also, mark your calendar for the Alumni Association’s annual meeting on Sept. 10 and the fundraising golf tournament on Sept. 27. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights Bridget Bilinski, ’79, Hotel & Restaurant Management, whose leadership training included working in a residence hall on campus.

Tasting & AuctionHomegrown Mania
July 24 – The Farm Store is sponsoring a competition for gardeners to enter their homegrown fruits and vegetables. Homegrown Mania will offer more than $300 in prizes in 15 judging categories. There is no cost to enter. If you have an abundance of produce, please consider bringing extra to donate to the St. John Vianney Food Pantry, which serves hundreds of needy families every week. Collins College 2nd Annual Alumni in the Outfield
Tasting & AuctionJuly 30 – The Collins College of Hospitality Management Alumni Chapter invites all hotel and restaurant management alumni, faculty and staff to an evening at the ballpark. Join the chapter for a pre-game party at OC Sports Grill at 5 p.m. and a game against the Texas Rangers at 7:05 p.m. at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Everyone gets a free T-shirt and will enjoy spectacular post-game fireworks! The cost is $29 for Alumni Association members, faculty and staff, or $34 for non-members. Career Center WorskshopsCareer Center Workshop Series
August 12 – The Career Center is offering two workshops to help students and alumni in their job search. “Rock Your Resume” is from 10 to 11 a.m. and “Hire Me! Alumni Volunteers Needed at Super College Fair
August 21 – CSU alumni volunteers are needed for the 4th annual CSU Super Saturday College Fair on Saturday, Aug. 21 at CSU Dominguez Hills. This is a free event from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. will bring about 2,000 students from elementary to high school. August 28 – Partners in Education (PIE) is sponsoring a workshop on “Strategies that Promote English Learner Success,” presented by Ernestine Riggs, professor and author. September 10 – The Alumni Association will be hosting its annual meeting on Sept. 10. Shakespeare Festival Presents ‘Hamlet’
September 12-October 3 – Cal Poly Pomona students and professional actors will present Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “Hamlet.” The festival will explore themes of revenge, madness, grief, treachery and corruption from a modern perspective. For more information, visit the Theater Department website.

Evening at the Ball Park
September 24 – The College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter is sponsoring its annual Evening at the Ball Park for an evening of networking, great food and baseball at Angel Stadium. The $40 ticket price includes a private reception, dinner and a seat in the field box level ($63 value). Please RSVP by September 10. To register or more info, click here.

Golf TournamentAlumni Association Golf Tournament
September 27 – Join the Alumni Association for a round of golf at the annual Cal Poly Pomona Alumni Association Golf Tournament. Help recognize outstanding student leaders and provide scholarships to deserving students in this time of great need. This year's golf tournament will be held at a private golf course, South Hills Country Club in West Covina. Bridget Bilinski
’79, Hotel and Restaurant Management

Bridget BilinskiBridget Bilinski’s rise to the top at Marriott International started in a somewhat unlikely role: that of resident advisor in a dorm at Cal Poly Pomona.

“That was great leadership training for me,” says Bilinski (’79, hotel and restaurant management). “I was responsible for 38 women; I had to create social experiences with the other wings; and I had to learn to manage people in a variety of challenging situations like relationship issues, drug problems, imperfect study habits and organizational challenges. That experience — along with my on-campus work at the Blazing Saddles beer bar, summer jobs at hotels in San Diego and my friendships with other working Cal Poly students — all those things together really gave me my start.”. Just as Charlie won a golden ticket to the chocolate factory, Cal Poly Pomona has secured a golden ticket - a trip to Microsoft world headquarters in Redmond, Wash.The golden ticket is an opportunity for a university to attract recruiters from Microsoft by sending a student on an all-expenses-paid informational visit. Based on the skills and personality of the student, as well as the university's curriculum and reputation, Microsoft decides whether to recruit new hires from the university the following year. While most students are taking the summer to relax off campus, about 40 members of the Cal Poly Pomona rose float club and committee are working on next year's entry in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade. Collaborative efforts from Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo have been in full swing since the design concept was finalized in February. Read more...

Concerts Under the StarsConcert Series Will Benefit Teacher Education
Enjoy live music, fine dining and the scenic backdrop of the La Verne foothills at the annual Hafif Concerts Under the Stars series. All proceeds will benefit Cal Poly Pomona's Partners in Education. These charitable concerts will be held Saturday evenings on July 24, 31 and Aug. 7 at the Hafif Estate in La Verne. "This is a great opportunity to gather with friends and family for a wonderful evening of great music, excellent food and a lovely atmosphere in a private estate," says Peggy Kelly, dean of the College of Education & Integrative Studies. PolyCentric mobile versionPolyCentric is on the Move
PolyCentric has launched a mobile version of its news website designed with iPhones, Droids and Blackberrys in mind. The mobile site, at http://m.polycentric.csupomona.edu, is the product of a collaborative effort between I&IT Web Development and the Office of Public Affairs. "Everybody's excited about this because everybody wants it," says Curtis Clark, director of I&IT Web Development. "Our testing by users indicates this should be a real plus for the university." Michael Whisenand, was unanimously appointed as superintendent of Alta Loma School District, which he attended as a boy. He received his special education credential and master’s degree in education from Cal Poly Pomona in 1982. Read more...

Kirsten Knauer has been named nationwide private dining sales manager for Newport Beach-based Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Knauer graduated in 2003 with a degree in hospitality management. Read more...

Napa grad Jennum to lead NCAA Div. II CSU San Marcos women’s squad” – Napa Valley Register (June 8)
Sheri Jennum, who played basketball for legendary coach Darlene May in 1984-85, will become the first women’s basketball coach at Cal State San Marcos. She graduated in 1986 with a degree in behavioral science. Read more...
