Baseball and outdoor concerts pair perfectly with warm summer nights. The alumni chapters for Collins College and the College of Business Administration are hosting networking events at Angels games in August and September. The popular Concert Under the Stars performance returns next month, and guests can enjoy classic rock ‘n’ roll and fine food while supporting arts and literacy education. This edition of Poly @lumni spotlights Diego Urrego, ’08 architecture, who received the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship for his graduate studies at Columbia University.

July 30 – Please join The Collins College Alumni Chapter from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco for an enjoyable evening of networking and a meet & greet with Dean Andy Feinstein, who is attending the I-CHRIE conference. Alumni in the Outfield - Angel Stadium
Dean Andy FeinsteinAugust 7 – Come enjoy an evening at the ballpark and catch up with alumni on Friday, Aug. 7, during The Collins College Alumni Chapter’s first Alumni in the Outfield. The chapter reserved a block of tickets for the Angels game in Anaheim at 7:05 p.m. A pre-game networking event begins at 5 p.m. across the street from the stadium at OC Sports Grill (Formerly National Sports Grill), 450 N. State College Blvd., Orange, (714) 935-0300. Tickets are $24 each for Alumni Association members, faculty and staff and $29 for nonmembers. Tickets are presale only. RSVP by July 17. Concert Benefits Arts Program
August 8 – Those who enjoy classic rock 'n' roll and fine food can indulge their senses and help local youth at the same time at the Concert Under the Stars. Benefitting the Academy for Literacy through the Arts, proceeds from this event support a four-week summer arts program at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center as well as free monthly Family Fun Days. Evening at the Ball Park
September 26 – The College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter is sponsoring its annual Evening at the Ball Park for an evening of networking, great food and baseball at Angel Stadium. Diego Urrego
’08, Architecture

A Cal Poly Pomona alumnus has been awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation graduate scholarship, only the third ever earned by a CSU student.

Diego Urrego, who graduated in 2008 with an architecture degree, will use the scholarship for his studies at Columbia University in New York, where he is pursuing a master’s in advanced architectural design.

The foundation received about 1,000 nominations for 30 graduate scholarships, which are each worth up to $300,000 over six years. The awards recognize outstanding students who exhibit a strong will to succeed and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be nominated by the foundation faculty representative at their school and may not apply on their own. Read more...

Budget Cuts Force CSU to Close 2010 Spring Admissions
As part of an overall strategy to address an unprecedented budget reduction of $584 million for 2009-10, California State University campuses will not accept student applications for the 2010 spring term — with very few exceptions. In addition, quarter campuses that have been accepting admission applications for the 2010 winter term ceased accepting applications as of July 6. Read more...

Michael WooWoo Named Dean of College of Environmental Design
Michael Woo, currently a member of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission and adjunct professor at the University of Southern California's School of Policy, Planning and Development, has accepted an offer to lead Cal Poly Pomona's College of Environmental Design. New STS Program Explores Science, Society
Complex and often controversial topics such as global warming, stem cell research, biotechnology in food production, and nonrenewable energy resources don't fall under any single academic subject. The issues encompass a broad spectrum of disciplines. Cal Poly Pomona will introduce the Science, Technology & Society (STS) program in the fall to address the convergence of these fields. Ray WangWang Appointed Dean of the University Library
Ray Wang has been named the new dean of the University Library, Provost Marten denBoer announced today. Wang joins Cal Poly Pomona by way of Humboldt State, where he has served as the library's interim dean since 2007. His appointment begins Sept. 1. Read more...
