The days have flown by as we find ourselves halfway through the summer and preparing for fall quarter. There are still many exciting events to attend and connect with Cal Poly Pomona alumni and friends, including the Concerts Under the Stars series at the beautiful Hafif Estate in La Verne and an evening of barbecue and baseball at Angel Stadium. This issue of Poly @lumni also spotlights Mahvash Yazdi, ’74, who studied industrial management and now serves as the senior vice president of Southern California Edison.

Summer Concert Series Benefits Arts Program for Youth
August 2 – Cal Poly Pomona is offering tickets for the Concerts Under the Stars series, featuring fine food and entertainment at the beautiful Hafif estate in the foothills of La Verne. Additional dates for this event include August 9 and 16. Tickets sold through Cal Poly Pomona will benefit a scholarship fund for the Academy for Literacy through the Arts—the university's extensive four-week summer arts program for youths. Read More…

September 4 – Author and educator Rick Morris will share a handful of innovative yet practical ideas from his incredibly successful “New Management” program of student management techniques, motivation and involvement. Read More…

Alumni Angel Game
September 26 – The College of Business Administration Alumni Chapter is sponsoring its fifth annual "Evening at the Ball Park" for all alumni at Angel Stadium. The $40 ticket price includes a private reception with a barbecue dinner and a seat in the field box level ($63 value). Read More.

Alumni Association Annual Golf Tournament
October 3 – Help the Alumni Association recognize outstanding student leaders and provide scholarships to deserving students. This year’s golf tournament is at Coyote Hills in Fullerton. Sign up today...

Matt's Run
October 18 – The third annual Matthew Myers Memorial 5K Run/Walk will be held at Cal Poly Pomona. Entry fees go towards the Matthew Myers Memorial Scholarship Fund. To learn more about previous Matt's Runs and the upcoming run, please visit www.mattsrun.org.

Mahvash YazdiMahvash Yazdi '74, Business Administration

Whenever Mahvash Yazdi ‘74 tackles a project, she will undoubtedly transform it into something remarkably different and better, not unlike the way electricity is made.

Before she became senior vice president and chief information officer (CIO) for energy giant Southern California Edison, Yazdi started out as a Cal Poly Pomona student struggling to finance her education. And, before she became one of four female CIOs in the state, the Tehran native had to acclimate to a new language and culture in the United States. Read more...

Business As Usual After Quake
All university buildings have been evaluated and deemed safe following a 5.4-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, July 29, at 11:42 a.m. The university returned to business as usual Wednesday, July 30. Read more...

2009 Rose Float Design Unveiled
The Cal Poly universities in Pomona and San Luis Obispo will warm up New Year’s Day with summer fun and games in “Seaside Amusement,” the universities’ 61st entry for the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. A fun, lively and whimsical seaside boardwalk featuring an assortment of amusement rides and attractions will represent the sister universities’ float in the 2009 parade themed “Hats Off to Entertainment.” The float will include a rollercoaster, Ferris wheel, parachute drop, game, food and ticket booths, carousel horses and bumper cars.
