It’s time to jump back into the Cal Poly Pomona community with several exciting events both on and off campus. On Feb. 6, Bronco Athletics is hosting a special dinner fundraiser with Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Ag, Collins and communication alumni are invited to reunion events over the next few weeks. Also, mark your calendars for the Southern California Tasting & Auction, where guests can sample the region’s best food and wine while supporting a worthy cause. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights Sheryl Thomas-Perkins, ’82, communication, who recounts how Cal Poly Pomona has helped her career.

Dinner with Angels Manager Mike Scioscia
February 6 – Manager Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will be the keynote speaker at a Hot Stove Dinner benefitting Bronco Baseball. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. at Buca di Beppo Restaurant, 505 W. Foothill Blvd., Claremont. The cost is $175. Guests will also be able to participate in a live auction for an opportunity to watch Angels batting practice and an All-Star game package for two. Click here for more info.

San Joaquin Valley Agriculture Alumni Reunion
February 10 – Join College of Agriculture Dean Les Young and representatives from Cal Poly Pomona for an evening of dining, reuniting and fun from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Visalia Holiday Inn Hotel & Conference Center. For more info, visit www.csupomona.edu/agri/news/alumnireunion.shtml.

Nadia Shpachenko & Friends Chamber Music Festival
February 17 – Pianist Nadia Shpachenko and award-winning guest artists Tina Chang Qu, violin, and Marek Szpakiewicz, cello, will perform piano trios by Chopin and Schumann in celebration of the 200th anniversary of their births. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students. For more info, visit www.csupomona.edu/mu.

Career ExpoHospitality Career Expo & Alumni Breakfast
February 18 – Collins College of Hospitality Management alumni are invited to the 17th annual Hospitality Career Expo and 2nd annual Alumni Bagel Mixer. The alumni mixer will start at 8:30 a.m. in the Amemiya Boardroom, and the Hospitality Career Expo will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in The Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch. Dean Andy Feinstein and The Collins College Alumni Chapter are hosting the breakfast for alumni. Email Amanda Smith at ajsmith@csupomona.edu by Wednesday, Feb. 10 if you plan to attend the mixer.

Writing Workshop for Teachers
February 27 – Cal Poly Pomona’s Partners in Education Alumni Affiliate Group presents “Writing to Meet California Standards for Language Arts.” This Saturday workshop features award-winning educator and author Deana Hippie. For more info, visit www.csupomona.edu/education.

Communications Alumni Reunion
March 4 – All communications department alumni  are invited to attend an upcoming reunion from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at Kellogg West. Hosted by the special events planning course, this function will include cocktails, dinner, music, entertainment, and a silent auction. For details, visit www.cppse.com.

Sheryl Thomas-PerkinsSheryl Thomas-Perkins
’82, Communication

For Sheryl Thomas-Perkins, the seeds planted during her Cal Poly Pomona years continue to develop throughout her notable career in communications. Before taking on a nine-year post as senior government affairs representative for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), Thomas-Perkins worked in public relations for the cities of Los Angeles and Atlanta and in journalism for publications in California and Georgia. Like a well-planned garden, her career has reaped the benefits of careful cultivation, which began in her college years.

“Cal Poly Pomona continues to sow good things into my life,” Thomas-Perkins says. “The work I do now often requires the research skills, attention to deadlines, and comfort with public speaking that I developed as a student.” Read more...

President Mike Ortiz'Jungle Cuts' Makes History
"Jungle Cuts," the Cal Poly Universities' entry in this year's Tournament of Roses Parade, has made history by winning two major honors: the Bob Hope Humor Trophy and the Viewers' Choice Award. The float, depicting a monkey barber shop replete with a menagerie of customers wearing mullets, beehives and mohawks, drew loud cheers as it ambled down Colorado Boulevard. Read more...

One of Cal Poly Pomona's most influential and effective leaders has announced his intent to retire. Dr. Edward Hohmann, who has served the university with distinction as dean of the College of Engineering and professor of chemical and materials engineering for 38 years, will retire on June 30, 2011. CSU Launches Bold Graduation Initiative
California State University announced a long-term graduation initiative at last week's Board of Trustees meeting with the goal of increasing the system's graduation rates and helping underrepresented students to complete college. The graduation initiative involves all 23 CSU campuses and is expected to raise six-year graduation rates by eight percent by 2016. Read more...

The American Red Cross is in Haiti providing emergency relief for earthquake survivors. The Cal Poly Pomona community can support those efforts relief efforts through a donation to the American Red Cross - Haiti. Read more...
