This month, take the time to celebrate student achievements with the campus community. The 14th Annual Hilda L. Solis Scholarship Dinner & Reception and the Rose Float Appreciation Dinner are great opportunities to honor students’ hard work both in and out of the classroom. This issue of Poly @lumni spotlights Shine Kang, ’84 Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Chief Information Security Officer at the Architect of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Speaking of our nation's capitol, the annual alumni reception with the California Congressional Delegation is scheduled for March 4 at the Rayburn Building.

CBA Kicks Off 2009 with Speaker Series
February 5 – Prakash Chandran, user experience designer for Google, Inc., has designed many web applications that have touched millions of people. He will give a presentation entitled "Putting the User First and the Rest Will Follow." Co-sponsored by the College of Business Administration Chapter of the Alumni Association and the College of Business Administration, the Executive Speaker Series invites industry leaders to discuss timely topics such as technology and information security. Rose Float Appreciation Dinner
Cal Poly Rose FloatFebruary 7 – Join the Rose Float Alumni Chapter and students from the Rose Float Club and Committee as they celebrate another award-winning year. “Seaside Amusement” was the recipient of the first-ever Tournament of Roses Viewers’ Choice Award. The festivities will be held on Saturday, February 7, at Kellogg West Conference Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Please join in acknowledging the hard work and dedication of so many students, alumni, friends and community supporters. Piano Concert with Alumna Tatiana Thibodeaux
February 7 – The Music Department presents a solo/duo piano concert with Tatiana Thibodeaux and Janet Noll at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $7 and will benefit student scholarships. Thibodeaux came to the United States from Russia, where she received bachelor's and master's degrees from the St. Petersburg Conservatory. February 14 – Meet artist Karen S. Kauffman at a reception during the Second Saturday Artwalk in the Pomona Arts Colony. Her exhibit, “The Rhapsody of Always-Is,” runs through February 28. Read more...

Mark Your Calendars for the Hospitality Career Expo
Career Expo BoothFebruary 26 – The Collins College of Hospitality Management and the Career Center will host the Hospitality Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the college. More than 50 companies will participate. Before the career expo begins, The Collins College Alumni Chapter will host a breakfast open house in the Hideo Amemiya Boardroom for alumni. Family Fun Day
February 28 – Come to the Downtown Center for a fun, activity-filled day celebrating art and literacy in Spanish. Activities include puppet shows, story time, games, crafts, healthy snacks and much more. The day’s events will be hosted in Spanish. Every child will receive a free book for his/her library. Cal Poly Pomona Goes to Washington, D.C.
March 4 – Join President Michael Ortiz and alumni from Cal Poly Pomona and 22 other Cal State Universities for the California Congressional Delegation event. The College of Agriculture – Celebrates 70th Anniversary (1938-2008)

Shine KangShine O. Kang
’84, Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Her first name, by definition, means to excel and stand out – something Shine Kang certainly does through her professional career and personal drive.

Kang serves as the Chief Information Security Officer at the Architect of the Capitol, a legislative branch organization. The Architect of the Capitol’s mission is to provide Congress and the public with a wide range of professional expertise and services to preserve and enhance the Capitol complex, including the U.S. Capitol, Senate and House of Representatives office buildings, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, Botanic Garden and Capitol Power Plant. Shine’s responsibility is to manage information security programs to protect the networks and information resources. Read more...

'Seaside Amusement' Wins Viewers' Choice Award
Cal Poly Universities' Rose Float, "Seaside Amusement," is the winner of the inaugural Viewers' Choice Award in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade. The  student-built float received 3,219 votes out of 10,618 votes submitted. More than 10,000 parade fans visited www.ktla.com/roseparade to cast their vote on Jan. 1 after the parade. Read more...

On the Dot: Bronco Express Now Includes GPS Tracking System
A new GPS system has virtually eliminated the guessing game for Bronco Express passengers. Parking & Transportation Services unveiled a GPS-based system that tracks the locations of the Bronco Express shuttles and gives riders wait times at each stop. Read more...
