| The end of the year is quickly approaching, but the Cal Poly Pomona campus isn't slowing down. The Rose Float Committee is hard at work making final preparations on this year's Tournament of Roses Parade Entry, "Tuxedo Air," which features the antics of penguins trying to fly. Alumni, their family and friends are invited to help decorate the float Dec. 26. The Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) have partnered with the university community to collect canned food and other needed supplies for the homeless. This month, PolyAlumni spotlights Michael Chu, a '77 landscape architecture alumnus, who has built a successful business in Hawaii, and has now made a planned gift of $350,000 to the university support landscape architecture majors. |

'77, Landscape Architecture
Every day, Hawaiians can see landscape architect Michael Chu’s designs and creativity in the newest Lowe’s home improvement store, seven Costco locations, and – Chu’s favorite – the renovated Hawaii State Library.
In fact, Chu, a ’77 landscape architecture alumnus, drives past the historic library building almost every day. “I eyeball it every time I drive by, and it’s looking great,” he says. “It’s a constant reminder of the work I have accomplished, and it came out pretty damn good.”

"Tuxedo Air" to Take Flight at Rose Parade
You will believe in miracles when penguins fly at the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.
OK, so the flightless water fowl might not have wings, but the Cal Poly Universities' float, "Tuxedo Air," depicts a number of the cuddly penguins learning how to take to the air in a most unusual way: with the help of engines, artificial wings and a ski-jump ramp. |
