Cal Poly Pomona doesn’t have a football program, but everyone knows that Rose Float is our fall sport, and we complete on New Year’s Day every year. Tune in to the Rose Parade on Jan. 1 and watch Galactic Expedition travel down Colorado Boulevard. You can also support students and the Rose Float program by voting for the float to win the Viewers’ Choice Award. We hope you’ll also explore a new section – College Roundup – we’ve added to Poly Alumni. This issue spotlights political science alumnus and former state senator Jim Brulte, whose endowment will allow students to experience Sacramento politics first-hand. |

Jim Brulte
’80, Political Science
As a senior majoring in political science at Cal Poly Pomona, former state senator Jim Brulte ('80) interned for U.S. Senator S.I. Hayakawa. Since he couldn't afford to move to Washington, D.C., his internship was limited to the senator's Newport Beach office, far from the rough and tumble of Washington politics.
Thirty years later, Cal Poly Pomona political science internships are still largely unpaid and local.
Now, with a generous endowment from Brulte, political science interns will be able to experience politics at its core. The Honorable James L. Brulte Undergraduate Internship for Public Policy will give students the opportunity to spend an academic quarter shadowing a politician in Sacramento.

Viewers' Choice Award: Going for a Three-Peat
Months of planning, designing, welding, bolting, forming and engineering are over. All that's left is the decorating. Galactic Expedition, the Cal Poly Universities' latest and 63rd consecutive Tournament of Roses entry, has made the 26-mile annual trek - this time in a driving rain - from the Rose Float Lab on campus to the decoration tent in Pasadena. In the last few days leading up to the parade, volunteers will cover the float with thousands of roses and carnations, as well eucalyptus and oleander leaves. Rose Float team members will check and double check to make sure the animation, mechanics and other operating systems are in good working order.

Interns Help Company Grow Hispanic Consumer Base
When Ohio-based Scotts Miracle-Gro Company opened a West Coast office in 2009, executives quickly spotted an opportunity to increase revenue. The company had never launched a comprehensive marketing campaign for the Spanish-language market despite an estimated 50 million Hispanics living in the United States who are projected to have a purchasing power of $1 trillion by 2013. Scotts wanted to reach this lucrative market, and one of the company's first moves was to hire two Cal Poly Pomona business majors as interns.
