Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Many exciting events are in store for 2009. In January, celebrate diversity, multiculturalism, justice and compassion as we commemorate two special dates – the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the 10th anniversary of Michi Weglyn’s passing. There also are two upcoming opportunities to meet recruiters from the engineering and high-tech fields, as well as the hospitality industry. This issue of Poly Alumni spotlights Seven Senft ’98, who is leading the revival of the Collins College Alumni Chapter. |

Family Fun Days: Discovering MLK, Jr.
January 24 January's Family Fun Day will focus on the values of Martin Luther King, Jr. as children and their families gather to make crafts and bring food and toiletries to those in need of hope and encouragement. The event is free and also includes face painting, healthy snacks, storytelling and other fun activities. Every child attending will receive a free book. The event will be held at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, located at 300 W. Remembering Michi Nishiura Weglyn: 10 Year Anniversary of Her Passing (1926-1999)
January 29 Come celebrate Michi Weglyn’s legacy with Phil Nash, writer, lawyer and professor; Dr. Franklin Odo, director of Smithsonian APA program; Dr. Bob Suzuki, Cal Poly Pomona president emeritus; Sharon Yamato, writer, biographer and filmmaker; and Nancy Kapitanoff, producer, writer, director and creative artist. The celebration is from 3 to 5 p.m. in Ursa Major, Bronco Student Center. Following this event is a special evening performance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. by three-time Grammy Award winner Daniel Ho and friends in the Music Recital Hall. CBA Kicks Off 2009 with Speaker Series
February 5 Prakash Chandran, user experience designer for Google, Inc., has designed many web applications that have touched millions of people. He will give a presentation entitled “Putting the User First and the Rest Will Follow.” Co-sponsored by the College of Business Administration Chapter of the Alumni Association and the College of Business Administration, the Executive Speaker Series invites industry leaders to discuss timely topics such as technology and information security. Mark Your Calendars for the Hospitality Career Expo
February 26 The Collins College of Hospitality Management and the Career Center will host the Hospitality Career Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the college. More than 50 companies will participate. Before the career expo begins, The Collins College Alumni Chapter will host a breakfast open house in the Hideo Amemiya Boardroom for alumni. The Collins College of Hospitality Management Alumni Chapter was revised this fall with Steven Senft ’98 at the helm. The new chapter president has high hopes that the membership will grow, and he expects chapter’s first event to coincide with the college’s Hospitality Career Expo in February.
Senft, a senior broker for HREC Investment Advisors in Beverly Hills, believes there is tremendous value in building a strong network of alumni. He and other members of the chapter’s board want to create more opportunities for alumni to interact with each other and with students, faculty and staff at the college. Read more... |

Collinses Pledge $5.25 Million to Jump-Start Donations to College
Carol and Jim Collins, the namesakes and primary benefactors of The Collins College of Hospitality Management, have once again shown tremendous generosity to Cal Poly Pomona. They have pledged to match dollar-for-dollar $5 million in donations for a $10 million academic building. Read more...
Rose Float Scheduled for Joy Ride to Pasadena's Brookside Pavilion
Before the Cal Poly Universities' Rose Float cruises down Colorado Boulevard on New Year's Day, it has to make its way from Pomona to Pasadena. Carol Richardson Named Dean of CLASS
Provost Marten denBoer has announced that Dr. Carol P. Richardson, professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has accepted an offer to become the new dean of the College of Letters Arts & Social Sciences.
