DECEMBER 2011 |
|
|
| As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect and celebrate the many achievements of our community. One highlight is the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Library, which recently moved to a new location on the first floor of the University Library. Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students have been working hard on the 2012 rose float, “To the Rescue!” Be sure to watch the Rose Parade and cheer for Cal Poly on Monday, Jan. 2. This issue of Poly Alumni spotlights Raymond Watje (’59, agronomy), who has had a successful career in agriculture and has remained committed to plant science students. Have a wonderful holiday season and we’ll see you in 2012! |

Raymond Watje
’59, Agronomy
Raymond Watje's roots at Cal Poly Pomona run deep. The 1959 agronomy graduate's dedication to plant science keeps him very much committed to the university — and its students.
Watje's appreciation for agriculture started at a young age. He was raised on a ranch in Riverside, where his family grew alfalfa, corn and beans. When it came time for college, studying crop production seemed a natural fit.
"When I attended the old Voorhis campus, it was an all-male school, there were only about 300 students, and it cost only about $49 per quarter," he says. "Times have definitely changed."

Arabian Horse Library Ties Past with Present
W.K. Kellogg had a vision to build a center for higher education that would include his beloved Arabian horses. Cal Poly Pomona is the product of that vision and continues to build upon Kellogg's legacy. The university recently unveiled a new facility for the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Library, which is dedicated to collecting and preserving materials about the breed, as well as Kellogg's original Arabian horse ranch.
Rose Float Students Seek Food Donations
The Rose Float Lab on the eastern edge of campus is hub of activity virtually year-round, but the pace quickens significantly in the final two months leading up to the Rose Parade. Dozens of student volunteers swing into action – fitting, welding, molding, painting and fine-tuning what will be the 64th consecutive Rose Parade entry for the Cal Poly Universities.
Eye-Opening Lessons for Freshman Engineers
QUEST, a college prep experience for engineers, immerses students in college life and academics the summer before their first year at Cal Poly Pomona. Participants learn about the campus and its resources, and they take math and physics courses that help build a foundation for the engineering curriculum.
$3 Million Grant for Cybersecurity League
The College of Business Administration will fast track its plans to create a West Coast cybersecurity league thanks to a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation awarded to Cal Poly Pomona and a consortium of western colleges. Grant money will be used to create CyberWatch West, a center dedicated to increasing the number of cybersecurity professionals among California, Washington and Oregon residents.

Governor's Support of CSU's Budget Proposal
The California State University's budget has plummeted nearly $1 billion since 2007-08 forcing us to increase our undergraduate tuition fees to keep our heads above water. Even with continued increases in student tuition fees, the CSU has be unable to generate enough revenue to keep pace with our state funding loss – the loss is simply too large. It is time for the state to stand behind its commitment to public higher education! Support the CSU and tell Governor Brown it's time to reinvest. |
