"Integrated"
waste management is aimed at using five strategies to minimize waste,
put it to good use or safely dispose of it. The first and best strategy
is always source reduction—produce less waste to begin with.
The next best are composting and recycling, followed by incineration
(trash to energy); and finally landfilling, or disposal in a sanitary
landfill, for non-toxic waste that can't be handled by the other, more prefered
strategies.
