AGREES

About AGREES

AGREES is a well-established college based program designed to provide student and faculty mentors to student members, a quiet area for studying, and activities to support student group interaction.

AGREES membership is available to all students that ask for assistance and sign-up for the services. The AGREES coordinator and student peer advisors meet monthly to discuss operational aspects of the program and plan special activities. They provide a minimum of one special event/workshop each month.

The AGREES center is open every weekday. Students have access to computers and help from student peer advisors in directing them to the proper campus resources. The AGREES center is a convenient place for students to meet and discuss common concerns and receive direction. The AGREES center provides its members with a "sense of community and belonging."

Favorite Cal Poly Pomona Experience:  I don’t have one favorite; I loved all the activities that the Peer Advisors put on.  The night hike on Halloween was very fun since we got to bond with the few students that did come and it was great to share something like that with all my friends.  Working Pumpkin Festival was a lot of fun too.  We worked hard and made the hay maze a success.  Hopefully this coming year we can improve it and make it even better.

Personal Statement About Being a Peer Advisor:  I really enjoyed being a Peer Advisor last year and am glad to be able to come back and continue to share my experience with new students.  I hope to be able to help students avoid any mistakes that I have made in the past when it came to classes, and I would like to generate more interest in the Peer Advisor program itself.

Stephanie WongName:  Stephanie Wong

Major:  Animal Science, pre-vet

Year in School:  Currently a second year student.

Age:  19

College activities:  SEES member, Pre-Vet Club member, Golden Key International Honor Society member, Alpha Lambda Delta member, Chinese Student Association treasurer, Multicultural Council Representative, and research in the chemistry department.

Hobbies:  Playing piano, listening to music, hanging out with friends, shopping, watching movies, small talk, catching up on sleep, and relaxing.

Hometown:  Walnut, CA

High School:  Walnut High School

Work:  Has worked/interned at animal hospitals.

Career Plans:  Obtain a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and going on to pursue a graduate level degree, whether it is a DVM or Ph.D.  I am currently planning on minoring in chemistry, so I hope to do something with a chemistry background.  I am also keeping my sights open for unexpected changes in the future!  I might end up doing something that I never planned on doing!

Favorite Cal Poly Experience:  Dorming my freshman year!  Though I am from Walnut, which is very close by, dorming was one of the best experiences!  I got to know people who are now some of my closest friends and experience the college life!  College just isn’t college if you commute!

Personal Statement:  I hope that I can be a positive influence for my future AG100 students!  I really took the time to talk to my peer adviser and ask her about things on campus and it really kept me one step ahead of the game! My aim is to make College of Ag students more informed and aware of what is going on within our college and our university as a whole.  The university is so big, and there are so many programs and opportunities that many people do not know about, thus hopefully I can be a stepping stone or a reference guide that future students can utilize!  I also hope to be a mentor that the students can see as a friend, as I can empathize with their problems and their situations, since I have been in the exact same situation as they have.  It is also very important to have peer advisers because many freshmen, upon coming to college, feel very lost about what they have to do.  It should be our job, as a peer adviser to give them guidance and a sense of direction, because there are only so many college advisers (who may not have an adequate image of what the school is like and the opportunities present).  Therefore, as a peer adviser, we should bridge the gap between the students and the faculty to continue to better the College of Agriculture!
