  Admission Requirements Frequently Asked Questions
 
  1. What are the requirements to be admitted? 
      You will be considered for admission if:
     
    • you have completed a four-year college course of study and hold an acceptable baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited or internationally recognized institution;
    • are in good academic standing at the last college of university attended;
    • have attained a grade-point average of at least 2.5 in the last 60 semester (90) quarter) units attempted;
    • and satisfactorily meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate studies, which may include qualifying examinations.

  2. What does the Office of Admissions & Outreach need in order to determine my degree equivalency?    Your official transcript (in the original language and a certified English translation) – including the posting of your degree.  Your diploma or degree certificate will also be required, if your degree is not posted on your transcript.
     
  3. When can I submit my application?  Students are strongly encouraged to submit their application during the Priority Application Filing Period as applications are subject to close at any time AFTER this period ends.
    Application Filing Periods:
    Quarter Initial Filing Period
    Fall Oct. 1 - Nov. 30 of the previous year
    Winter June 1 - 30 of the previous year
    Spring August 1 - 31 of the previous year
    Summer February 1 - 28 of the same year     

  4. How do I apply for admission to Cal Poly Pomona? We strongly encourage you to apply to Cal Poly Pomona on-line at CSUMentor.  Your application and $55.00 filing fee
    (or fee waiver request) must be submitted by the application deadline.

    Apply on-line! It is faster and more accurate.  Application receipt will be confirmed via email.
     

  5. Are there any tests that need to be taken?  Some departments require new graduate students to take the General and/or Subject Test of the GRE before admission.  The GMAT is required for those who seek the Master of Business Administration degree or the degree of Master of Science in Business Administration.   Read the Testing Requirements for Graduate & Post baccalaureates.
     
  6. What is the deadline to get my supporting transcripts/documents in? The application and supporting document deadlines are available online for domestic and international applicants.
     
  7. How do I check the status of my application file?  Your application status and information regarding documents received should be available approximately two weeks after it has been received.  You may check the status of your application through:
    • BroncoDirect; or
    • call 909 869 4555 between 8 am to 5 pm (PST) and ask to be transferred to an Graduate Admissions Analyst.  Please leave a voice mail message, speaking slowly and distinctly, so that we can return your call as soon as possible.
       
  8. What undergraduate GPA is required to be considered for admission into a graduate program?  The minimum GPA required for consideration is 2.50 based on the last ninety quarter units -- depending upon the specific graduate program.
     
  9. How many letters of recommendation are required for the MBA program?  Three letters of recommendation are required for the MBA program. Mail or fax them directly to the MBA program.
     
  10. Are letters of recommendation required for the Credential program?  The Credential Program does not require letters, but the letters will certainly help you to be considered for the program.
     
  11. What documents are required for international students?  Typically, the following documents are required to be in the Office of Admissions & Outreach as soon as possible after you have submitted your application:
    • official transcripts sent directly to the Office of Admissions & Outreach from the institution(s) you have attended;
    • official degree certificate, transcripts and degree certificate in the original language (depending upon from what country your bachelor's degree was obtained);
    • the international packet sent to you from Cal Poly Pomona completely filled out -- including visa, health insurance, financial support with bank certification; and
      TOEFL score results-- if you have not attended an American institution or have completed fewer than six full-time semesters at an American institution.

       
  12. What is the minimum TOEFL score required for graduate programs?
      Minimum TOEFL score required for all programs:
     
    • a score of 550 (paper-based); or
    • a score of 213 (computer-based)

      Note: The essay portion is mandatory in certain programs.

  13. Do I need to submit a TOEFL score result if the language of instruction is English at the institution where I obtained my bachelor's degree?  If English is the language of instruction at the institution but we do not recognize that fact, then we will need a letter from the institution or the Ministry of Education on official letterhead stating that English is the language of instruction.
     
  14. When will my I-20 be issued?  Typically, your I-20 will be mailed to the address you indicated on you application within five working days from the time you are formally admitted.  For more information about obtaining your I-20 from the International Center AFTER you have received your formal letter of admission, please call (909) 869-3267 or send an e-mail to glnalbandian@csupomona.edu.
   
  General Frequently Asked Questions
 
  1. What kind of housing is available?  Several housing options are available including the Residence Halls, Residential Suites, and University Village.  Detailed information regarding these housing options are available through the University Housing Services.
     
  2. What percentage of Cal Poly Pomona students live on campus? Approximately 12 to 15 percent of the students live on campus.
     
  3. Why should students live on campus?  National studies show that students who live in residence halls have a higher grade point average. This is because they are closer to the faculty, campus, and peers in the same program. Residence halls have a 20% better chance of graduating and overall residence hall students are more satisfied with their college experience.
     
  4. What does it cost to attend Cal Poly Pomona?  Approximate costs for both undergraduate and graduate international students are: Tuition and Fees: $11,300 per year; Books and Supplies: $1224; Transportation: $1,000; Room and Board: $6,747; Incidentals and Health Insurance: $2,200.   5. How do I apply for Financial Aid?  International students are not eligible for federal financial aid but the International Center administers a generous partial tuition assistance scholarship program for international students based on academic performance and other meritorious criteria.

    International graduate students are eligible to apply for a tuition assistance scholarship after studying at Cal Poly Pomona for at least two quarters and meeting all eligibility requirements. For undergraduates the residency requirement is 3 quarters.

     
  6. Is Cal Poly Pomona on a quarter or semester system?  Cal Poly Pomona is on a quarter system, which lasts 10 weeks, plus one week for finals.
    Term breakdown
    Winter Quarter January - March
    Spring Quarter March -June
    Summer Quarter June - August
    Fall Quarter September - December

    Cal Poly Pomona is one of the few CSU’s with a state supported summer quarter. This means that the fees are essentially the same for the summer. Other CSU’s may charge more for the summer.
     

  7. What food services are available on campus?  With all the selections on campus, you can satisfy your appetite for different types of food.

  8. Can students get e-mail and access Cal Poly Pomona from home?  Yes, all Cal Poly Pomona students receive a free e-mail account that they can use on and off campus.
     
  9. How safe is Cal Poly Pomona compared to other campuses?  When compared to other CSU’s, we rank 9th in terms of size and student population and 9th in terms of total crimes. Our University Police office is staffed by trained professional police officers and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round. All campus telephones are connected to 911, located in the Communication Center. University Police is staffed by trained dispatchers and provides telephone and two-way radio contact for emergency personnel and also serves as an after-hours contact for students, faculty and staff.

  10. Will I have a problem finding parking on campus?   Students are encouraged to arrive early to allow time to park and walk to classes. Bronco Express Campus Shuttle service is available to take students from the parking lots to classroom sites.

    There are several programs that have been implemented to enhance the availability of parking on campus. (I.e. Faculty/Staff Ride Share, Student Ride Share) In addition, our classes are scheduled from 7 a.m. till 10 p.m.
     

  11. How many acres does the school cover?  Cal Poly Pomona covers 1,438 acres and is the second largest California State University in total land area.
     
  12. What percentage of faculty have terminal degrees?  Ninety-nine percent of the tenured and tenure-track faculty hold the doctorate or terminal degree in their fields.
     
  13. How does Cal Poly Pomona compare/rank with other institutions?
    • The University graduates one of out fourteen engineers in California.
    • One of the 134 colleges named Best in the West by The Princeton Review.
    • One of US News & World Report Western Universities-Master's:Top Schools
    • The University was recently ranked fourth in the West out of 112 Western Regional universities for campus diversity.
    • The Collins School of Hospitality Management is ranked third in the nation by restaurant executives.
    • The University also has one of the top Division II athletics programs in the country, with 13 national team championships and 25 individual national championships to its credit. Our most recent championships came when our Women's Basketball Team captured the 2001 and 202 Division II National Championships.

  14. Is it true that Cal Poly Pomona participates in the Tournament of Roses parade?  Yes. Cal Poly Pomona and its sister campus, San Luis Obispo, have participated in the prestigious parade since 1948. In 1998, we were awarded the Founder’s Award.
     
  15. What new developments are in store for Cal Poly in the near future? There are several projects that are in design and in construction.
