RAINFOREST FACTS

 

  • The oldest, msot complex ecosystems on Earth exist in the
    Tropical Rainforests
  • Tropical Rainforests do many things for the environment including:
    supplying the world with oxygen, retaining carbon, and affecting climate
    patterns
  • Rainforests occupy about 5.3% of the earth today
  • Rainforests are being destroyed for the following purposes:
    logging - cattle ranching - mining - oiil extraction - hydroelectric dams
    susbsistence farming
  • Rainforests supply us with many products such as:
    glee gum - coffee - nuts - wood - chocolate - vanilla
    sugars - medications - latex rubber
  • Rich in plant and animal diversity, the tropical rainforests house half of the plant and animal species found on the planet
  • The Amazon Rainforest is home to about 1/5 of the world's plants
    and animals alone
  • Tropical rainforests often ahve from 160 - 400 inches of rain a year
  • There are currently 2.6 million square miles left of the rainforests.
  • At Cal Poly Pomona there is a facility called BioTrek, that is dedicated to the educational experience of creating a tropical rainforest environment
    in which students can learn about the rainforest hands-on!
