All of the CSU campuses have been asked to encourage students to graduate in a timely manner so that there are more seats available to all students seeking a degree. It is not intended that standards be lowered by waiving requirements or making inappropriate substitutions. It is hoped that this process will help students to keep their focus on the goal of a degree leading to a good job or a postgraduate education.
Super Duper Seniors (SDS) are students who have accumulated more than 135% of the units required for one or more of their academic majors (and have earned at least 90 units at Cal Poly Pomona). SDS students receive a registration hold each quarter until they graduate. The first quarter they receive such a hold, they meet with a designated advisor in their department to complete a Graduation Plan Worksheet. Each subsequent quarter SDS students meet with their advisor to discuss their progress.
Department advisors have been assigned the task of advising these students because they are in the best position to provide the expert advice that these students need to graduate with a strong record that will lead to future success. The first time that the department advisor meets with the student, a graduation plan should be completed. Then the advisor will enter the student’s graduation term in BroncoDirect and move the registration hold to the following quarter. On each successive visit, the advisor will update the plan and again move the hold to the following quarter.
If a student fails to follow the contract and does not have a reasonable explanation for doing so, the student may be sent for advising to your associate dean who may place the student on academic/administrative probation. If the student continues to deviate from the contract without cause, the student may be forwarded to Academic Programs for possible academic/administrative disqualification.
The Data Warehouse has three files to assist the advisor in this advising. “Undergraduate Students with Total Units Over 100% Summary” lists the number of students in each program who have accumulated more than 10% of the units required for one or more of their academic majors. “Undergraduate Students with Total Units Over 100%” lists all students who have accumulated more than 100% of the units required for one or more of their academic majors. “Undergraduates with Cumulative Units over 135% Detail” is a detailed PDF report listing the outstanding requirements for each SDS student.
