PROVOST AND VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

California State Polytechnic University , Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) seeks an educational leader of vision and exceptional energy to serve as its Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Provost is the chief academic officer and second ranking executive officer of the university, acting for the President in his absence. The current interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will not seek the permanent position. Working in close collaboration with the President, the Provost will advance the institution’s quality and standing as a learning-centered university dedicated to students and to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and community engagement.

 

The University: Cal Poly Pomona is a comprehensive public university that is widely recognized for its polytechnic mission and learn-by-doing philosophy. One of the 23 campuses of the California State University , it is consistently ranked as one of the best public universities in the west. Cal Poly Pomona currently enrolls 21,400 students (with approximately 70% representing diverse ethnic groups) and employs approximately 1,250 faculty members and 1,180 staff. Through its seven colleges and hospitality management school, the university offers 55 undergraduate majors and 28 master’s degree programs, 9 credential programs, and 5 certificate programs in addition to a doctorate in education offered jointly with the University of California, Irvine. Cal Poly Pomona is noted for its beautiful and historic 1,400-acre campus, once the Arabian horse ranch of cereal magnate W. K. Kellogg. It is located approximately 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in one of the most dynamic economic and cultural regions in the country. Duties and Responsibilities: The Provost leads and manages the university’s academic organization, which includes seven colleges, the hospitality management school, the university library, and a range of support and service units. S/he oversees academic planning, resource allocation, policy formulation, academic unit reviews, accreditation, general education, and curricular development in collaboration with deans, department chairs, and faculty. The Provost is responsible for academic personnel decisions, including appointment, retention, tenure, and promotion. S/he supports efforts that strengthen experiential learning opportunities for students and expands opportunities for faculty scholarship and community service. The Provost guides program development that serves the needs of the region and the state as well as national and global communities and forges both public and private sector partnerships that strengthen Cal Poly Pomona’s ties with the community. The Provost serves as one of the President’s chief policy and strategy advisers, and works collaboratively with other members of the President’s cabinet (which include the vice presidents for student affairs, administration, university advancement, and instructional and information technology) to achieve the university’s goals within a framework of shared governance. Reporting directly to the Provost are academic deans; dean of the library; dean of the college of the extended university; associate vice president for undergraduate studies; associate vice president for faculty affairs; associate vice president for research and graduate studies; executive director for institutional research, assessment, and planning; and director of academic resources.

 

Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

 

Appointment and Salary: The university seeks to fill this position by August 1, 2008 . All rights associated with this appointment are governed by the California State University Management Personnel Plan, under which incumbents receive an attractive benefits package, are subject to regular performance reviews, and serve at the pleasure of the President. Salary is competitive and commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience.
