UNIVERSITY OMBUDS DIRECTOR

Cal Poly Pomona seeks an individual to serve the campus community, administration, faculty, staff, and students, as a facilitator to promote a positive campus climate and environment. The Ombuds serves as a campus resource for facilitating informal problem resolution through listening, providing information, making referrals to other campus resources, and identifying options and alternatives . The Ombuds provides a confidential, neutral, independent, and informal process which facilitates fair and equitable resolution to concerns or complaints. The Ombuds is responsible for developing, coordinating, and promoting the office to the campus community, as well as conducting appropriate workshops related to conflict resolution, conducting informal mediation, and identifying and reporting trends to the University President.
The University: Cal Poly Pomona is a comprehensive public university that is widely recognized for its polytechnic mission and learn-by-doing philosophy. Cal Poly Pomona currently enrolls 21,400 students (with approximately 70% representing diverse ethnic groups) and employs approximately 1,250 faculty members and 1,180 staff. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The successful candidate will promote and maintain the ethical principles and essential functions of the Ombuds profession including independence, neutrality, impartiality, confidentiality, and informality through demonstrated experience and proven ability in the following areas:
· Strong conflict resolution, problem solving, and mediation skills
· Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the position
· Ability to evaluate complex issues and deal with sensitive concerns
· Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or groups, analyze and define the problems, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences or various alternative actions
· Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization within a culturally diverse campus community
· A high degree of credibility and ability to interact effectively with academic and administrative leadership including deans, department heads, and others involved in the issue or concern brought forth by the visitor
· Knowledge of university policies, student issues, academic programs, and institutional protocols, and the ability to explain state, federal, CSU, and Cal Poly Pomona policies and procedures
· Ability to develop, design, and present educational and informational programs and/or workshops that are appropriate to the position
· Highly effective listening skills
· Possess a high level of tact and sensitivity
· Strong oral and written communication skills
Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess the following professional qualifications:
Required:
· Master’s degree
· A minimum of three years of directly applicable experience is required, along with
knowledge of and experience in higher education including its culture, structure, typical
administrative and academic programs, policies , and practices.
Preferred:
· An advance degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D.)
· Certificate of training for Ombuds, Conflict Management, or similar training
Appointment and Salary: The University seeks to fill this position by July 1, 2008 . The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a Management Level III position with an attractive benefits package, which includes a vacation accrual rate of 16 hours per month, an excellent choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance, long-term disability coverage, life insurance, educational incentives, and retirement benefits.
