What are we reading this year?

Kelsey Timmerman

Where Am I Wearing? A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People That Make Our Clothes
by Kelsey Timmerman

When journalist and traveler Kelsey Timmerman wanted to know where his clothes came from and who made them, he began a journey that would take him from Honduras to Bangladesh to Cambodia to China and back again. Where Am I Wearing? intimately describes the connection between impoverished garment workers' standards of living and the all-American material lifestyle. By introducing readers to the human element of globalization—the factory workers, their names, their families, and their way of life—Where Am I Wearing bridges the gap between global producers and consumers.

Kelsey Timmerman is a freelance writer who focuses on globalization, travel, the outdoors, adventure, and what it means to be a Touron (moron + tourist) in worlds of clashing cultures.  He has spent the night in Castle Dracula in Romania, gone undercover as an underwear buyer in Bangladesh, played PlayStation in Kosovo, taught an island village to play baseball in Honduras, and, in another life, he worked as a SCUBA instructor in Key West, Florida.

Based on the book, Where am I Wearing,  by Kelsey Timmerman

Experts provide suggestions concerning how we can best serve the interests of workers, producers, and consumers of clothing.  Three of the most common are: (a) Let the market operate with little regulation or interference; (b) Guarantee minimum safety, health, and wage standards for workers; (c) Promote domestic manufacture of clothing.

Using the information that Timmerman provides in his text, explain which of these three suggestions has the most merit, taking into consideration the positive and negative consequences of your choice. Defend your position with examples from the text as well as evidence from other sources.

Required Format:

Use Times New Roman 12-point or Arial 11-point, double-space your essay, and use 1-inch margins. Essays should be about four pages long, plus references if applicable.
