Announcement: AAALAC will be site-visiting Cal Poly in the fall for our fourth renewal of accreditation.
Federal regulations require the use of an ACUC at any institution that uses animals as per the USDA definition or has vertebrate species research supported by the PHS. The tasks of an ACUC include reviewing all protocols involving the use of animals by an employee of that institution as part of his/her official duties. The meaning of “use of animals” is not limited to usage on campus, but also includes field studies. A unique feature of this institution, compared to other CSUs, is that we are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laborator
y Animal Care, International (AAALAC) and have been since 1997. This is the highest standard of accreditation that can be achieved by an institution using laboratory animals. The NIH, in its current policies, accepts AAALAC accreditation as the best means of demonstrating conformance with NIH requirements for animal care and use. The ACUC is responsible for helping to maintain the high standards that AAALAC demands of its accredited institutions.
