Enduring Gratitude

Q:

Growing up, I was always encouraged by my parents to continue my education beyond high school. I'd like to honor my parents and at the same time help deserving college students in need of financial assistance. How do I go about setting upa scholarship?

A:

Cal Poly Pomona offers several opportunities to recognize parents, love ones or friends:

NAMING OPPORTUNITIES span the gamut from the naming of a building to a piece of equipment. In between we have opportunities to name classrooms, laboratories, lounges, patios and parks. Each has an assigned pricing formula that is based on either the new or replacement construction/purchase price.
ENDOWMENTS have become exceptionally popular as an excellent method to recorgnize a loved one, and in a way that lasts "in perpetuity." Typically endowments are established to fund scholarships or special trust accounts for a specific academic program or activity. The minimum to establish a named endowment is $10,000 as only the earnings are used to fund the intended program. This fully protects the principal, which is left intact to produce the required funds year after year.
SCHOLARSHIPS are probably the most traditional vehicle a university has of setting up named recognitions. Ongoing scholarships may be funded by endowment (as mentioned above), using a lead trust or by making a pledge forn an annual gift. Of course, a one-time-only scholarship is funded at the appropriate level prior to the awarding and distribution.

All of the above may be funded through convenient payment plans to include cash (check or credit cards), transfer of stock or real estate, gift trust and bequests.
