Cal Poly Pomona's latest miracle baby arrived at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center on April 6 at 9:30 a.m. The long-legged beauty, a chestnut filly, is the result of an embryo transplant performed last April under the watchful eye of farm manager Jerry Liberatore.
The filly's biological mother, CP Dance Card, is one of the university's top show horses, representing the university in English pleasure classes throughout the United States. Approximately one week after being bred to Monogramm, a leading sire of international champions, the embryo was collected from "Dance" and implanted in a donor mare, Ama Fire. "Ama Fire, who has already competed her show career, is a wonderful broodmareand mom," says Liberatore, who is an expert on equine embryo transplants. This gives Dance an opportunity to continue making a name for herself in the show ring, which elevates the value of her foals and raised interest in the university's breeding program. "I guess you could say she's a working mother," Liberatore adds. The foal has not yet received her official name, but has already earned her place in Cal Poly Pomona's equine history books. She is just the second embryo transplant foal to be born on campus. |
