The Mechanical Engineering department offers students a nationally renowned program based on Cal Poly, Pomona's "learn by doing" approach to education. Our priority is teaching undergraduate students. Class size is limited to 30 students with faculty, not teaching assistants, teaching all courses. The faculty bring into the classroom their own industrial experience which provides students with a realistic perspective and understanding of the engineering world. Laboratories are also taught by faculty and geared towards experience in the types of analysis used in real engineering applications. Illustration of the concepts learned in the classroom and familiarization with actual mechanical hardware are also emphasized.

ME graduates are uniquely suited to jobs in all traditional areas of mechanical engineering including mechanics, machine design, energy systems, fluid flow, heat transfer and thermodynamics. To ensure this, all students take the same fundamental courses, but then choose a series of technical electives geared towards their own interests or career objectives. Additional experience is gained through student design projects and voluntary participation in student clubs, honor societies, and design competitions.

Unique to the Mechanical Engineering department is the ME Project Development Laboratory. This lab provides students a facility in which to actively develop, design, fabricate, and test academic related projects. Some of the more challenging design projects have included solar vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, human powered submarines, as well as the SAE Formula and Mini-Baja vehicles. The facility consists of basic machine shop equipment including vertical and horizontal milling machines, engine lathes, grinders, welding equipment and hand tools.
