Faculty: 2008 IC Travel Grant Program

What is the International Center 2008 Travel Grant?

The International Center is pleased to announce an international travel grant program for the calendar year 2008. The purpose of this program is to enable faculty members to travel internationally to facilitate professional development and enhance the educational mission of Cal Poly Pomona. This year, the International Center is disbursing a total of $7,000 in travel awards.

How can faculty use the award?

Grants will be awarded to support international travel (travel expenditures, per diem, registration fees) 1) that increase faculty international expertise; 2) that relate to research and scholarship; 3) that cultivate a relationship between Cal Poly Pomona and international institutions; and 4) that relate to the development of new courses to internationalize the curriculum.

Funds may not be used for travel inside the United States, even when associated with an international focus. All travel and expenditures must be completed by December 31, 2008.

How much is the award?

The International Center Advisory Council will consider awards of up to $1,000, depending on the total cost of the proposed activity and other sources of funding. Only one proposal per individual will be considered. Please note that the President of the University will need to approve all international travel before funds can be expended.

Who may apply?

Tenure-track, tenured, and lecturer faculty who teach at least three courses per academic year, as well as department chairs may apply. Faculty members who are retired or serving in administrative positions are not eligible to apply.

What to include in the proposal?

The application needs to clearly address the following:

  1. Describe, in no more than three pages, the basic purpose of the proposed travel; identify goals/objectives that are realistic and achievable; include project timeline.
  2. Describe the relationship of the activity to your international professional development and the Cal Poly Pomona mission.
  3. Produce an itemized budget, including total cost of the proposed project and other possible funding sources. Include a breakdown of expenses for proposed travel.
  4. Include a letter, signed by your department chair and the dean, indicating approval of the proposed travel.

Please do not submit any other supporting documentation.

Other requirements?

Within three months of the completion of funded activities, awardees will be expected to submit a report to the International Center. This report should include a description of the activity funded. In addition, the report should identify practical solutions to problems or facilitate an area of concern that the faculty member encountered while traveling internationally. In other words, the report will offer practical advice to real situations that collectively will provide a resource base for all faculty at Cal Poly Pomona.

Some potential questions to be addressed include: What are the essentials in an orientation of students and/or faculty before visiting a country for the first time? What practical questions does a faculty member traveling abroad need to consider? What role does the International Center play in faculty international travel?

The reports will be posted on the International Center website. Please provide both a hard copy and an electronic version of your report.

If a report is not received, the applicant may not apply for further travel assistance from the International Center.

What is the application timeline?

Send a hard copy of your application, including the budget and approval letter, to Päivi Hoikkala in the International Center by Monday, January 28, 2008, by 5:00 p.m. Please also provide an electronic copy of your application and budget by e-mail at phoikkala@csupomona.edu.
