COMMITTED TO CLIMATE CHANGE – I&IT Learning produced a video for Cal Poly Pomona’s Climate Commitment Task Force that highlighted our “green” efforts. Trevor Henderson produced, directed and edited the production that highlighted simple actions such as recycling, compact fluorescent light bulb exchange and increased use of public transportation as actions that can have significant results. The American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) task force asked all participating campuses to enter a video competition to demonstrate creative strategies for communicating how their respective campuses are reducing greenhouse gases. Our university became a charter supporter of the ACUPCC pact when President J. Michael Ortiz signed the agreement. See the video at climate.

ACCESSIBILITY ON THE MOVE – As part of Fall Conference, I&IT hosted a workshop on accessibility, “Making a Universal Connection for Learning.” More than 40 faculty members and 20 students and staff attended. The event was a joint effort of I&IT’s Accessible Technology Initiative team, I&IT Learning, I&IT Web Development, the Disability Resources Center, Procurement, the Health Center and the Faculty Center for Professional Development. Topics discussed included:

  • Universal-design case studies created by Cal Poly Pomona faculty
  • Video captioning with DocSoft
  • Accessible math formulas with MathType
  • Accessible PowerPoint presentations
  • Accessible web pages using Spinneret
  • Convert speech to text with Dragon Naturally Speaking
  • Convert text to speech with Kurzweil
  • Testing web site accessibility using AccVerify
  • Organizing ideas using Inspiration.

I&IT staff that participated included Stephanie Doda, Carol Heins-Gonzales, Hye Ok Park, Karen Brzoska, Trevor Henderson, Daniel Smith, April McKettrick, Pauline Salim, Erick Zelaya, Rick Cass, Imran Hamid, Jason Beers, Bo Soh, Terry Hogan, Martha Aguilar, Curtis Clark, Jerry Lerma and Nishant Limbachiya. As proof that I&IT is committed to accessibility, this year’s Fall Conference was captioned for hearing-impaired viewers for the first time.

FINDING SENSITIVE DATA – A major project for all the university that I&IT is leading is deleting unneeded Social Security Numbers (SSNs) and other confidential information from state-owned computers. We have recently set up a program called Find_SSNs. This software, developed by Virginia Tech, scans user and network share drives, seeking numbers that appear to be SSNs. They can then be removed by using a secure deletion tool. Leading the effort is Al Arboleda and Denny Mosier. Team members include Gary Pierce, Lori Okamoto, Marcy Gates, Bill Sing and Angela Mahoney. Thanks also to Mauricio Calderón and his I&IT Applications team, which beta-tested the program on his department’s computers. All of I&IT followed up with beta testing during the summer.

MORE SECURE PASSWORDS – Our division has nearly completed a project that mandates secure passwords for the entire campus community. More than 20,000 students, faculty, staff and emeriti have changed their passwords to more secure formats. This involved changes in a web page that allowed users to change their own passwords, much how-to documentation and modifications in servers, databases and structures. Leading the project is Al Arboleda, with a lot of work from Gary Pierce, Mauricio Calderón, Joe Matsumoto, Dave Drivdahl, Paul Henson, Denny Mosier, Marcy Gates, Angela Mahoney, Tim Raymond, Curtis Clark, Jinah Young and Candie McDougall and the Help Desk team.

ANNUAL DIVISION MEASUREMENTS PUBLISHED – I&IT has just released its annual measurements of services and applications. The report is at performance. Measuring such items as BroncoDirect reliability and the number of online classes is part of the university’s initiative to continually assess and evaluate our services.

MODERNIZING LEARNING SPACES – I&IT had a busy summer participating in two infrastructure upgrades. The Library recently showed off its new wing with a lavish open house on the first day of fall quarter. Along with the new rows of books, specialty areas and new services is state-of-the-art networking. Bill Maris and Gabriel Kuri worked hard to assure the best network connectivity. I&IT also installed six new Leaning Centered Technology Classrooms in the Library. Building 3 recently underwent a seismic upgrade that included turning 32 classrooms into modern learning rooms. Heather Fannin coordinated the upgrades as part of the Learning Centered Technology Initiative project. During the summer, Heather led the project that modernized 21 classrooms. Counting these recent upgrades, there are now 201 technology-equipped classrooms throughout campus.

NEW LAPTOPS FOR FACULTY – Courtesy of lottery funding, 356 professors who first received laptops from 2004 through early 2006 are receiving new laptops. Coordinating the project is Denny Mosier, but the real key players were Mina Figueroa and Marcy Gates. The two carefully compiled and checked Denny’s records to assure the faculty received the right laptop. The laptop project also provided 15 new faculty members with Macintosh or Windows notebook computers.

SPEEDING UP THE NETWORK – The campus network connection to the Internet was recently upgraded to a one Gigabit link. The move, from the old OC-3 connection, more than doubled the speed for the users in the dormitories and residential suites. For the rest of the campus, users saw their speed increase more than six-fold. The project also included the installation of a redundant Internet link that will provide connectivity should the primary link fail. Leading this long project was Gabriel Kuri, working with our Internet Service Provider, CENIC.

NEW LOOK WEB PAGES – I&IT’s Web Development department rolled out its latest version of web templates with a new look for the Collins College of Hospitality Management web site. This is the first use of the web template version 4.2. Curtis Clark built the templates and developed the new navigation format. Jerry Lerma produced the banner graphics and designed the photographic placements and the faculty and staff pages. The directory uses a Perl script written by Heath Caldwell. Remaining content was added by Efren Gomez and Lisa McPheron from Collins.

PBX UPGRADED FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES – Our campus telephone system was upgraded over the summer as the existing Avaya PBX was replaced by the latest product from the same vendor. The upgrade will allow us to integrate new technologies. These include Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and unified messaging, where emails, voice mails, text messages and faxes can be integrated into as single storage place and retrieved from a variety of devices. This was a team effort with contributions from Stephanie Doda, Linda Bruner, Ernie Lizarraras, Gabriel Kuri and Brian DeWolf. The cut over occurred Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 when the campus was closed as part of the summer 4/10 schedule.

NEW HELP DESK TICKETING APPLICATION – The division has started using Web Help Desk (WHD) as its new Help Desk ticketing application. WHD replaced Help Line, which has been used at the Help Desk for the last several years. WHD is a complete transformation, and offers easy escalations, reporting and tracking details of Help Desk calls and walk-in customers. As of early October, more than 2,300 tickets have been entered using the new program. Key players included Dave Drivdahl (who set up the server and application), Paul Henson (who configured the Unix operating software), Mauricio Calderón and his Data Base Administrators (who quality-controlled the data setup and moved data from Help Line) and Candie McDougall (who set up the front-end data structure and trained the Help Desk and users throughout I&IT). Plans call for WHD to be introduced to the campus in 2009 so users can enter their own tickets.

PEOPLE NEWS – Welcome to Geoffrey Gordon Beekman, the second son for Jarod Beekman, I&IT’s Associate Director of Networks and Telecommunications, and his wife Joanna. Geoffrey arrived Aug. 3, 2008...Zaira Angelo has started as the division’s new Accessibility Technology Initiative (ATI) assistant. Zaira is working with Carol Heins-Gonzales, coordinating workshops. Zaira will also use her marketing skills gained as a graduate of our College of Business working on the ATI web pages.
