Summer 2008 Learning Seminars

I&IT recently concluded the second of two weeklong summer institutes that will result in more online classes.

Forty-two faculty members attended “Faculty Summer Institute for Hybrid & Online Course Development.” More than 150 faculty members have attended some form of online training since January 2008, resulting in more than 40 new hybrid or online course offerings.

“It takes a transformation to move your classes from the traditional face-to-face lecturing and discussions to online,” noted Hye Ok Park, Director of I&IT Learning, who coordinated the seminars with her staff. “You cannot simply transfer your material online and expect it to have the appropriate pedagogical and technological components.”

In the most recent seminars, participating faculty members spent time learning to use Blackboard, Adobe Connect and multi-media applications effectively. The seminars are so popular that I&IT Learning is planning more for the break between fall and winter quarters.
“The faculty like the time set aside to concentrate on learning a new method of teaching,” Park said.

Sessions included “Managing Course Content,” “Creating and Managing Assignments,” “Engaging Students Through Discussion Boards and Groups,” “Extending Classroom Communication,” and “Integrating Library Electronic Resources.”

A new feature in the recent seminars has been Learning Centered assessment. Participants assess 50 characteristics of the classes they develop and present a “show and tell” session at the end of the weeklong seminar.

All participating faculty have received certificates of completion and will receive stipends, once their course development work has been completed and reviewed by I&IT Learning’s instructional design team.

Participants in the summer institutes were:

Edward Merritt, Zhenxing Mao, Neha Singh, Jill Nemiro, Sandra Emerson, Zekeriya Aliyazcioglu, David Lord, Lara Preiser-Houy, Henry Xue, Edward von Leffern, Sandra Dixon, Terri Gomez, Carol Larson Jones, Sandra Yang, Barbara Hoeling, Eileen Wallis, Michael Liang, Sharonda Wallace, Jon Phillips, Danilo Franco, Salam Salloum, Hyun Joo Im, Homeyra Sadaghiana, Xiashui Xu, Helen Ross, Rick Mathias, David Adams, Lin Wu, Angel Valdes, Christy Stevens, Ertan Salik, Dorothy Wills, Hossein Ahmadzadeh, Anne Wohlcke, Felicia Thomas, Donald St. Hilaire, Jocelyn Pacleb, Louis Foster, Vinita Dhinga, Amar Raheja, Mikhail Gershfeld and Peggy Perry (audit).

Typical of the participants’ comments was an evaluation by Dr. Foster, assistant professor of Animal and Veterinary Sciences.

“Thanks for the awesome summer institute,” he said. “I learned a lot while having fun. The enthusiasm of the team, and the way the team exuded this wave of desire for all the participants to learn, made it a great learning experience.”

I&IT Learning staff that worked diligently on the institute program were Karen Brzoska and Martha Aguilar (helping Park run the institutes); Pauline Salim, Bo Soh, April McKettrick, Erick Zelaya, Jason Beers and Bedan Kamau (who provided pedagogy, instructional design and course building instruction on Blackboard, Connect and other multi-media products); Bedan Kamau, Trevor Henderson and Daniel Smith (copyright); and April McKettrick and Daniel Smith (accessibility awareness and training).
