[5-17-08] Newport Beach Cleanup 10-1PM

If you missed the last beach cleanup, or if you're simply ready for more gloves, trash, and people looking at you funny when you ask them if they're going to keep that wrapper, (Not to mention the food, friends, and fun in the sun!) then you're in luck! The Newport Beach Cleanup is coming up:

When: May 17 8:30 a.m. The Beach Clean-Up is from 10-1.  The BBQ is from 1-4.
Where: Newport Beach
Carpool: Meets behind Building 1 at 8:30 a.m..  Driving directions and exact meeting location TBA.
RSVP by: Thursday May 15th or you will not be carpooling with us. Please include how many people will fit in your car or if you are in need of a ride.
No RSVP? Not enough food.  Guests, please bring 5 bucks for lunch.
What to Bring: Swim suit, sunscreen, towel, beach games, community service sheets, and your favorite drinks/snakes/side dishes/condoments, etc.

Please bring money for parking and to help pay for gas.  If you are a passenger, give your driver a couple of bucks for gas and parking.  Please make sure your tank is full when you come to check in.

[Ongoing] Youth Workers and Artists Needed!

Are you thinking about teaching as a career? Would you like to see if you really enjoy working with youth? The Academy for Literacy through the Arts provides opportunities to work with children and youth in a supportive arts environment at the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center.

Volunteers are needed for 4th Saturday Family Fun Days as well as our Summer Arts Academy.

[Ongoing] DTC Gallery and Event Volunteers

Do you love art? Would you like to volunteer in an artistic environment?

Second Saturday, gallery, and event volunteers are needed! The Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center Gallery participates in the monthly Arts Colony art walk every 2nd Saturday of the month from 6-9 p.m. Opening and closing receptions are held during that time for the public to meet the artist. This is but one of the ways in which you can become involved in the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center Gallery.

[Ongoing] Tutor and Mentor for the Ennis W. Cosby Child and Family Services Friendmobile

The Friendmobile is a tutoring and mentoring program that operates out of the Cal Poly Pomona Downtown Center, located at the corner of 2nd and Main in the heart of downtown Pomona.

The program serves children ages 5-15 from local schools, most of whom have learning difficulties.The program operates on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.

We need volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors to these children. No experience is necessary. All you need is at least one hour of time available on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, and the desire to make a significant difference in the life of a child.

General Interest

[05-09-08] Hall Family Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships and one $250 book grant will be awarded to students in the honors college, thanks to the generous contribution of alumnus, Silvia Hall. Applicants must:

                   *Be a member in good standing of the Kellogg Honors College

                   * Be a major in Agriculture, Engineering, or Science

                   * And have a CPP GPA of 3.75

Applicants must submit an essay on the topic of "what being in the Kellogg Honors College Means to Me" (500 words of less)

Winners will be judged on the content of the essay and the contributions of the student to the Honors College.

Scholarship applications must be received by 5:00PM on May 9th. Submit applications to Theola in the Honors Commons.

[Ongoing] HOT (Helping Our Troops)

A non-profit, non-partisan organization founded by a CPP student (she's a Sr. now).  The organization sends care packages to US troops serving around the world.  The service people email requests, and each package is individually made for the person.  You can learn more about HOT at www.helpingourtroops.com
