Cal Poly Pomona

Welcome to Environmental Design

ATTENTION STUDENTS: IF YOU'RE HAVING PROBLEMS REGISTERING FOR CLASSES, PLEASE SEE YOUR DEPARTMENT'S ADMINISTRATIVE COORDINATOR FOR ASSISTANCE.

As our name implies, the College of Environmental Design is fully engaged in solutions to today’s pressing issues.  Our programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban & Regional Planning, Art, and the Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies are providing educational programs and explorations of the topics of the day: green architecture, greenhouse gases, transportation and land use planning, alternative fuels, recycling, watershed studies, the vitality of feral landscapes, urban design and art installations.  Our faculty members are dedicated to providing an education which is current, complete, technologically up-to-date, and one that explores the ethics of protecting our environment.

The graduates of the College of Environmental Design at Cal Poly Pomona are in high demand.  Each year the students host a Career Fair, which is filled to capacity with private firms and government and non-profit agencies.  These employers come to campus to hire our graduates, and to offer paid internships.  Our graduates are known for their ability to be productive as soon as they begin their jobs.  They are known for being well rounded, with excellent design and thinking skills, as well as superb technical abilities.

As Dean, my task is to maintain high standards in our programs and to move the College forward.  One of our greatest needs now is more space.  Our Architecture program has been impacted for over 30 years.  This means that its demand exceeds its capacity, and the campus allows the program to be very selective in its admissions.  Last year the Architecture program had 2,000 applications for 120 spots.  Obviously, we could admit many more high achieving students if we had more space.  The Landscape Architecture programs will also admit 120 new students this fall.  Our total student body, in all the undergraduate and graduate programs, now exceeds 1,700.  The demand for our programs is steadily increasing, but we’ve run out of space.  It would also be beneficial for interdisciplinary collaboration to consolidate our space as we are currently spread from one end of campus to the other in 15 buildings.  The campus is about to begin a capital campaign, and one of those projects will be a new building for the College of Environmental Design.

The faculty of the College of Environmental Design have been very engaged in research about the built and natural worlds, especially in Southern California.  The motto of the Landscape Architecture Department is “Regenerating Los Angeles”.  Our faculty members have received national and local design awards, federally funded research grants, and serve as officers of local and national professional organizations.  Our students have also received national and international recognition for their design projects, and our Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban & Regional Planning programs are all ranked in the top 25 (sometimes top 10) nationally in their fields.

The College of Environmental Design offers study abroad opportunities in all of its programs.  Venues for exchanges or study tours include Italy, Greece, Mexico, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Denmark, Japan, and Morocco.  The college and the departments have many scholarship opportunities: some cover campus fees and others are for travel.  Our student body is very diverse, as is our faculty and staff.

The College of Environmental Design is an exciting place to study and to teach.  We invite your questions.  You may contact me at: kchanna@csupomona.edu.
