BRONCOS WIN ONCE,
LOSE TWICE IN OPENING WEEK: Cal Poly Pomona’s men’s basketball team, ranked
22nd in the nation in the Division II Bulletin’s preseason poll, dropped
two of its first three games in a busy opening week. The Broncos got their
season underway with an 85-61 victory over Vanguard
University Tuesday in Kellogg Gym.
The Broncos scored the first 10 points of the second half to break open what
was a tight game in the first half. Cal Poly Pomona had three players score in
double figures and shot 55 percent for the game. Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS)
scored a game-high 20 points and also had four rebounds and four assists to
lead the Broncos. David Sybesma (Jr., Corona,
Corona Centennial HS) also had a big game with 18
points, five rebounds and six assists. Hervey Malone II
(Jr., Pittsburg, Pittsburg
HS) had 10 points and two assists. Vanguard held a 30-28 lead with five minutes
to go in the first half, but the Broncos closed the half with a 12-3 run,
capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Malone. Dion Cook (So., Canoga Park,
Chaminade HS) scored the
first five points of the second half to start the Broncos on their game-breaking
spurt. Jonathan Boyd (Jr., Fontana,
Etiwanda HS) had nine points, seven in the second half, while Billy Hofman
(So., Sierra Madre, La Canada HS) and Kaelen Daniels
(Fr., Compton, Artesia HS) had eight points each. The Broncos then participated
in the Chuck Randall Thanksgiving Classic at Western Washington
and lost both games. Cal Poly Pomona opened the tourney with a 74-68 loss to Saint
Martin’s on Friday. The Broncos held a 43-25 rebounding edge, but
shot just 36 percent for the game. Bonds had a strong game, scoring a game-high
23 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Sybesma
added 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Boyd had nine points,
four rebounds and three assists. Cal Poly Pomona led by one point at halftime,
36-35, but Saint Martin’s scored the
first four points of the second half and led the rest of the way. Cal Poly
Pomona then fell to tournament host Western Washington,
99-82. The game was tied at halftime, 45-45, but the Vikings used two big
second-half runs to pull away. Bonds had another impressive performance,
pouring in 26 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Sybesma added 18 points, six rebounds and six steals, Cook
had 11 points and four assists and Malone II had 10 points and three assists. Western
Washington held a 36-25 edge in rebounding and shot 57 percent.
BONDS
BECOMES CAL POLY POMONA’S ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER: Jeff Bonds (Sr., Compton, Mayfair HS)
didn’t waste any time in becoming Cal Poly Pomona’s all-time leading scorer.
Bonds started the season just 54 points behind Lucas LeCour’s
record of 1,302 points. Bonds scored 20 points in the
Broncos’ season opener against Vanguard, 23 against Saint Martin’s and then 26
against Western Washington and now has 1,317 points in his Cal Poly Pomona career. Bonds has been a Preseason All-American the past two years
in Street & Smith’s preseason publication and he earned first-team All-West
Region and All-CCAA last season.

PLAY WITH PAIR OF HOME GAMES: Cal Poly Pomona’s women’s basketball team,
which is ranked 25th in the nation in the Division II Coaches’

weekend against a pair of Northern California rivals. The Broncos will host

game after this weekend until Jan. 7. Candice

game in four of the past five years, which is more than any other Division II
program. Included in that run are national championships in 2001 and 2002.
MORE NEWS
FRANCIS NAMED TO
ALL-REGION VOLLEYBALL TEAM: Kellie Francis (Jr., Chino,

past season. She helped Cal Poly Pomona record a 9-7-2 overall record and advance to the California
Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament for an unprecedented
seventh straight season. There were a total of 11 players named to the first
