BASEBALL: WILDING EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS

2005 Record: 30-23. 2005 CCAA Record: 25-14 (South Division champions)

NCAA Division II West Region Ranking: 6

BRONCO PITCHER RECEIVES THIRD-TEAM RECOGNITION: Cal Poly Pomona’s Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) became the first Bronco baseball player since 1994 to earn All-America honors when he was selected to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association’s All-America team. Wilding was named to the third team and became the first Cal Poly Pomona player since Brian Dennis in 1994 to receive All-America honors. He also earned honorable mention All-America honors by the National College Baseball Writers’ Association. Both teams were announced on Tuesday. The awards cap a successful off-season full of awards for Wilding, who was previously named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year and received first-team All-West Region honors by the ABCA and the NCBWA. Wilding compiled an 11-3 win for the Broncos in 2005 with a 2.80 earned run average. The 11 wins were the most for a Cal Poly Pomona pitcher since Wayne Koklys won 13 in 1988. Wilding led the CCAA in innings pitched (112 1/3) and strikeouts (112). He also showed tremendous improvement since 2004. As a sophomore, Wilding was 1-5 with a 5.08 earned run average. He had won a total of four games in his Cal Poly Pomona career prior to 2005. Wilding and Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) were both named to the 2005 NCBWA Division II All-West Region teams last Tuesday. Wilding earned first-team honors, while Lopez received second-team recognition.

BRONCO DISTANCE STAR FINISHES EIGHTH IN 5,000 METERS: Cal Poly Pomona’s Daniel Rojas (Sr., Baldwin Park, Mt. Rojas, who also earned All-America honors in the fall in cross country, picked up the 89th All-America award in Cal Poly Pomona men’s track and field history. Two other Broncos competed in the championships. Jason Johnson (Sr., San Dimas, Citrus College) ran in the 100 and 200. He just missed qualifying for the finals in the 100, placing 11th overall with a time of 10.57, which was just off the final qualifying time of 10.56. He also placed 19th overall in the 200 with a time of 21.48. Adam Moore (So., Moorpark, Moorpark, HS) ran in the 400 hurdles and was 16th in qualifying.
