BASEBALL: WILDING, LOPEZ EARN ALL-REGION HONORS

2005 Record: 30-23. 2005 CCAA Record: 25-14 (South Division champions)

NCAA Division II West Region Ranking: 6

BRONCOS PLACE TWO ON ALL-REGION SQUADS: Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team received good news last week when the 2005 NCAA ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region teams were announced. Taylor Wilding (Jr., Alta Loma, Etiwanda HS) earned first-team honors, while second baseman Matt Lopez (Sr., Lancaster, Quartz Hill HS) received second-team recognition. Wilding, the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s Pitcher of the Year, compiled an 11-3 record for the Broncos with a 2.80 earned run average. The 11 wins were the most for a Cal Poly Pomona pitcher since Wayne Koklys won 13 in 1988. Wilding led the conference in innings pitched (112 1/3) and strikeouts (112). Lopez, meanwhile, who earned first-team All-CCAA honors, made the second team for the region. He hit .364 with one home run, 22 RBI and 33 runs scored. He was also an outstanding defensive player, recording a .971 fielding percentage with only seven errors in 234 chances. It’s been quite a spring for both players, who have shown tremendous improvement during their Cal Poly Pomona careers. Wilding was 1-5 last season as a sophomore with a 5.08 earned run average and had won a total of four games in his Bronco career prior to 2005. Lopez, meanwhile, hit .157 and .221 in his first two years with the program before hitting .345 and .364 his last two seasons. Lopez has also been rewarded for his academic work. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII College Division team in voting done by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He has been forwarded to the national ballot.
